Events

• The "International Police Association," the largest police organization on Earth, is formed.

• United States President Harry S. Truman orders the development of the hydrogen bomb, in response to the detonation of the Soviet Union's first atomic bomb in 1949.
  Albert Einstein warns that nuclear war could lead to mutual destruction.

• The "Turing test" is published.
  Originally called the "imitation game" by Alan Turing, this is a test of a machine's ability to exhibit intelligent behavior equivalent to, or indistinguishable from, that of a human.
  The test results do not depend on the machine's ability to give correct answers to questions, only how closely its answers resemble those a human would give.

• Since Turing first introduced his test, it has proven to be both highly influential and widely criticized, and has become an important concept in the philosophy of artificial intelligence.
