By Kyle DeWitt

Taking a brief glance around Kyle found himself in the Carrayan bar with his fellow Tactical officers. At first it didn’t make any sense to him, especially since the last thing he remembered was lying down on one of the Pegasus’s surgery beds. Seconds passed by and it felt right, even though he didn’t remember how he’d gotten there in the first place. However, it didn’t matter because it started to feel like everything was going according to plan. It seemed he wasn’t paying attention to the ongoing conversation.

“So, Lieutenant. Who was you’re first love?”

He felt that the question was somewhat inappropriate for the people under him, but Kyle decided it was better to indulge his officers. Besides if he didn’t he might just have a riot on his hands, and from previous experiences that wasn’t a desired outcome.

“Let’s see it’s goes all the way back to my final years before the Academy. We’d just started walking each other home from some event.”

I can smell the perfume Ashley was wearing. She always wanted to show herself off no matter what I thought about the moment. Then again it didn’t even matter the two of us weren’t romantically involved in any way, but that didn’t keep me from developing any feelings for her. I began to sense the night creeping in on us and I wanted to get her home safely without any unforeseen incident. Unfortunately for me the only way to shave our time was to go through the worst alley in town. I saw the horror in Ashley’s eyes as I tried to talk her into it.

“Are you sure about this Kyle?”

Leaning her close to my body I began to feel the warmth emanating from her. I could feel the gentle and caring smile form across my lips. I never realized how happy I was in that one moment. Even though my heart was pounding for so much more I resisted my urge to have her. I figured I didn’t have a chance with her.

“Don’t worry Ash. You don’t honestly believe I’d allow anything to happen to you? Not on my watch.”

Feeling her grip on my body tighten I could feel each hormone on my body rage. It was a good thing too. My sense of alertness had begun to rise. We weren’t even halfway through the alley before I felt some kind of danger stepping ever so close. Feeling the need for speed I felt an increase in my pace and I continued until a sound from the shadows startled both of us.

“Terran!”

I still ask myself why I stopped to this day. I should’ve known that the voice was Klingon, but I’m confident it wouldn’t have matter either way. I knew their intention was to take Ashley for their own and I was going to use every once of my power to keep it from happening. Turning toward my adversaries I had my first true look at a Klingon face-to-face. My first impression that a fight was definitely going to ensue was thanks to the training uniform the two Klingon teens covered themselves. Another confident blow was given when I took in the two of them being armed, and well I had nothing for a weapon. Of course I tried to keep everything peaceful.

Pulling Ash of I found myself standing between her and the potential captors. With a look of pure anger I tried to bluff my way out of the situation.

“Who do you think you are? This is my alley and my girl. Now why don’t you get the hell out!”

My own arrogance soon turned out to be a lucking for punishment. The small warrior’s knife that the eldest held was soon just inches away from my neck. I figured he was trying to keep some sense of honor in his pathetic life. I should’ve just let him keep it, but I felt like I was king of the universe. With another step I felt the point of the blade, but so far I’d remained uninjured, which I knew deep down in my heart that it was all about to be over. I took a step back, but I didn’t see one of the Klingons make his way behind me to force a sandwich between the two of them. I then realized the only way out was to fight, I knew the odds were slim. Had the odds been reversed the Klingon would enjoy a victory like that so I pushed myself with that determination. My first thought was take their knife away and either use it for myself or keep them from using it against me. Throwing a punch at the Klingons weapon wielding hand, I was soon met by failure. Losing my balance I found myself face first in some concrete.

“Stupid Terrans. There so predictable, don’t you think.”

With all my anger rising I knew they were talking about me, especially when Klingonese began being spoken. I wasn’t sure what they were saying and quite frankly I didn’t care. At the moment all I wanted was to eliminate the aggressors. Pushing myself up I attempted an attack from behind, and not caring if the Klingons saw it as cowardly and unhonorable. At first it looked like I was successful when the knife dropped to the ground, but for a moment I forgot their were two of them and not just the one I was dealing with. The next thing I knew and felt was a sharp sting in my back. At first it took me a few seconds to completely realize what had happened, I’d been stabbed directly in my back. Dropping to the ground again I could see my opponent’s leaving, and I wasn’t quite sure why even to this day.

“Thank god.”

On the ground I felt small teardrops falling from my eyes. I wasn’t scared of what was happening, but mad because I’d failed to completely defend Ashley. Sure nothing happened, but I couldn’t help but think what they would’ve done had they chosen to do so. My back was becoming numb and I knew my time was running short. Although once Ashley made her way to check on me, my whole body instantly became warm. Seeing her pull out a civilian communicator I tried to stop her, but couldn’t muster any kind of voice. I just wanted to spend what time I had left, cause I just had the overwhelming feeling that I was going to die in that cruel alley. Slipping into unconsciousness I had been picked up by medical authorities for the town. It wasn’t until several days later that I found myself in the local hospital. I had always hoped of being a doctor, but even so I didn’t want to stay in that room. All I wanted was to get to Ashley, and nothing more. While I slowly attempted to get out one of my nurses came in with a sign of distress.

“Mr. DeWitt please remain in your bed.”

I didn’t give a damn about what I was being told. I didn’t belong in that ward and I knew what I needed to find. Making my way up I could see the nurse’s attitude become more for her profession. I saw the hypospray in her hand and while I wasn’t exactly sure what it contained I knew it was something she would use to subdue me. I pressed on until the door opened up one more time, and it didn’t take any argument for me to stay in the room once I saw Ash. With an all-out sprint to her I just placed my arms around her and didn’t want to stop the embrace. With a look of forgiveness and kindness I knew only one thing needed to be said from me and I wasn’t going to be stopped now.

“Will you go out with me Ashley Warren?”

At first it seemed like all my dreams were about to crash right then and there. Ashley was taking her time to answer and with each passing second my nervousness rose. When the answer came it was something I had been waiting to hear for the past couple years.

“Yes! Yes I will Kyle.”

Facing the eyes of his officers Kyle felt confident that he gave a story of his past just as well as he remembered it. He could’ve withhold it all from his people, because as his subordinates he had no obligation to tell them. He gave a smile as each person seemed to absorb the information his story contained. Giving a sly smile, which only one of his officers recognized, the officers under his command that had joined him weren’t going to be left of the hook that easy. The voice he spoke in even gave his intentions away which only that one man recognized as well.

“You heard my story. Now it’s only fair that you guys fess up as well. And that’s an order.”

Kyle ended with a small laugh since he knew he couldn’t enforce the order with them being on leave, but he felt it needed to be said anything. He figured it would get them to volunteer the information anyways. With a smile Blake Tyler began to divulge his first love. Kyle felt happy that he was able to get to know his people like he was.

However, it seemed to almost be a complete dream. Everything started to become engulfed by a bright and shining white light. Kyle didn’t know exactly what was happening. It then occurred everything had happened only in his subconscious. He’d planned the shore leave trip not specifically on Carraya IV, but with the most recent information accessible his subconscious decided to keep his mind active. Looking around at the other injured personnel Kyle waited for assistance to acquire his prosthetic arm.
