A transceiver was a communications device that combined a transmitter and a receiver. In radio communication, a transceiver is an electronic device that combines a radio transmitter and a receiver. It can both transmit and receive radio waves using an antenna, and these two functions are often combined in a single device.

To be considered a transceiver, the handling circuitry of both functions (transmitter and receiver) must be significantly integrated with each other.

Examples are two-way radios, such as CB radios, cell phones, aircraft transponders, and Starfleet communicators.
