A "Titan II"-type rocket

The Titan II was an American Human-rated expendable rocket type that was in service with NASA and the United States Air Force in the mid-20th century.
The rocket was used for national defense and space exploration.

Titan II rockets were later used in the mid-21st century, during World War III, as a type of nuclear missile.

  • One rocket of this type formed the framework and launch vehicle for Zefram Cochrane's experimental warp ship, the Phoenix.

Prior to the Phoenix, the most famous use of the civilian Titan II was in the NASA Gemini program of crewed space capsules in the mid-1960s.
Twelve Titan II GLVs were used to launch two U.S. uncrewed Gemini test launches and ten crewed capsules with two-person crews. All of the launches were successful.
Starting in the late 1980s, some deactivated Titan IIs were converted into space launch vehicles to be used for launching U.S. Government payloads.
