While working with Kristina Dys, a fellow science officer, they fell in love. They were briefly married and had only a few months together as husband and wife before she left on a secret mission involving the attack on the Borg Mega-sphere. That battle ended on or about 22003.06, during which Alex suffered a minor injury while trying to thwart the efforts of Borg that had infiltrated the ship. Officially, she is listed as MIA, because her remains were never recovered, but she is presumed KIA.

Alex has been allowed to pursue his research while raising his daughter. Star Fleet was willing to accomodate his requests so that he might not resign his commission. It has not been easy raising his daughter as a single parent, but he has had help from his friends. For his own safety and that of his family, he tends to live in an isolated and secret location most of the time, though he does speaking engagements and has recently agreed to help out by taking the position of head of Science on the Aquila. He has always tried to promote science in Star Fleet and thought it would be a good experience for his daughter to encounter more people, broadening her horizons and giving her a more grounded perspective as she grows up.

His current psychological profile states that although he experienced emotional trauma in his youth, from the loss of his twin sister, he is fit for duty. He exhibits above average intelligence with mildly introverted tendencies and some difficulty in social situations. Boarderline OCD work habits lend to his innovative strides in his preferred fields of study.
