Unlike other Ferengi, Rom’s genius did not lie in business, but instead in engineering. As latinum was how a Ferengi got by in life, he relied on his brother to get him through, until he was finally employed as an engineer on Deep Space 9. He joined the station's Bajoran engineering crew, as well as Chief O'Brien's maintenance team, where he received high praise.
