At 17 years old, Miles O’Brien enlisted in Starfleet, becoming an Engineer and participating in more than two-hundred battles, developing a hatred and racism for Cardassians. By the time he was assigned to DS-9, his racism had lessened, and had been with Starfleet for over 20 years. On the station, O’Brien found himself dealing with multiple problems every day, as Cardassian, Bajoran, and Federation technology were not meant to be combined and work together. The only thing Miles loved more than his job was his family: every time before going into a battle, he would record a “goodbye” message for them, believing each time that would be the one they would hear. He once described his marriage to Keiko as, “the greatest adventure of them all. It's filled with pitfalls and setbacks and mistakes, but it's a journey worth taking because you take it together.”
