Duration: Approximately 24 18 months

Phase one takes place at Star Fleet Academy mid-way during the cadet's first second year. when they are selected from among the Tactical program and identified as potential Tactical or Operations officers. Much like their pilot colleagues, Tactical cadets are split into training groups, and will learn the basics of tactics and strategy. Upon completion of phase one, candidates are streamed into one of three programmes based on their speciality: Tactical, Operations, or Strategic Planning.

Duration: 18 12 months

In their third final Academy year, the Tactical cadets are put right to work with more courses of instruction to prepare them for their follow-on training. In addition to classroom lectures, the Candidates eventually progress into advanced holodeck training related to their training stream, where they spend the majority of their time. The culminating weeks at Tactical HQ involve several scenarios pitting team against team in mock battles or problem-solving competitions. It is at this point that Candidates receive assignments, based on performance, to the specific type of work they will specialize in. Upon completion, the Candidates graduate from the Tactical Officer's Course and are for the first time recognized as Tactical Officers before being assigned to their first duty stations.
