Upon graduation, s/he was assigned to the Utopia Planitia fleet yards and was a small part of the team that finalised the theoretical work on the transwarp gates and began their construction. By the time the gates were done, and used to such final effect in the Krynar war, s/he was a full Lieutenant and well-used to managing a team of R&D engineers. The section turned their efforts towards increasing efficiency; the transit time seemed immutable (but was insignificant in the face of extreme distances possible), but the power draw was prodigious.
S/he completed a Command Course as a bureaucratic box-checking exercise and a stepping stone to hir next promotion, but shortly afterwards received notice that the USS Dauntless, 2nd Fleet independent-ops, required a new Chief Engineer. S/he had enjoyed hir work on the transwarp project, but had always wanted to see the galaxy shes/he'd joined the Fleet for in the first place. S/he accepted the transfer.
