Personal History
Adam was born in Chicago, IL to Martha and James Slattery. The Slattery family had emigrated from Ireland to the United States in the late 1800s and had lived in Boston and Chicago ever since. Most of the family had been law enforcement officers dating back to the 19th century. By the time Adam was five years old, James was already a Commander in the Chicago Police Department.
Adam’s early life was normal by all standards. He attended elementary and junior high like the rest of his peers. He was smart, but not overly so. He was a solid A-, B+ student. In his early life, he expressed interest in sports more than academics. He particularly was fond of baseball. He especially loved the history of the sport. He played in youth leagues and on his school’s team. When he had free time between school and sports, he helped his mother in her bar.
After he graduated high school, he joined the Chicago Police Department. His older sister, Elizabeth, had joined a few years earlier and was already on the fast track to become Detective. While he enjoyed police work, Adam was not quite sure he wanted to remain working in the confines of the city of Chicago forever. But it was the family business – and he was expected to follow in his family’s legacy.
A few months onto the job, he was paired with a second year police officer, Alex Greene. After a rocky start in the partnership, the pair quickly became good friends. A little over a year and a half into his career, Slattery and Greene participated in a raid on suspected Orion smuggling site. The raid was a trap and Greene was killed in the ensuing firefight.
Convinced there was a mole in the Chicago Police Department, Adam devoted the next six months of his life to bringing the perpetrator to justice. His father, now the Deputy Superintendent of Police, did not believe there was a mole and refused to provide Adam with support and resources. This ultimately put a strain on their relationship. The two had not spoken
Ultimately, Adam uncovered the mole in the Department and was awarded the CPD’s highest medal of valor. But haunted by the memory of his dead friend and overshadowed by his father, Adam resigned from the Department after two years. Adam’s mentor, a former Starfleet Marine colonel, convinced him to put his skills to use for Starfleet.
