The PR-1 rifle's projectile weapon system works by using a set of magnets held apart by a small non-magnetic pin. The 'bullet' is dropped into the chamber and held in place by the forward magnet. When the trigger is pulled (in any of the modes) the rear magnet is released by the pin lowering, causing the magnet to accelerate forward. This magnetic force silently propels the projectile out of the barrel. When the magnet reaches the end of it's cycle, the forward magnet's charge is reversed, pushing the aft magnet back into place, and then the process is repeated. In full-automatic mode, this process can occur approximately 30 times per second so long as the trigger remains activated; in burst mode, it occurs three times per trigger pull; and in semi-automatic mode once per trigger pull. The trigger is mechanical in nature, and the entire process uses no power other than that generated by the magnets moving in the 'firing' chamber. The magnetic field is weak enough to not be affected by standard dampening fields.

Description

The PR-1 Assault Rifle, by Andorian Arms Inc., is the culmination of 20 years of research and development into a multi-function assault rifle. Developed with the Borg threat in mind, the PR-1 has since evolved to become the standard assault rifle in Star Fleet and the Star Fleet Marine Corps.

The PR-1 is a departure from previous weapons developed for Star Fleet in the fact that in addition to energy pulses, the power pack of the PR-1 can be replaced with a magazine containing kinetic rounds and a small battery to power the magnets lining the barrel length. In addition, the power levels of the energy based shots were simplified for ease of use. Gone are the days of 10+ power settings; now there are just two settings; stun and kill.

Capabilities and Functions

The PR-1's projectile weapon system functions using powerful electromagnets coiled around the weapon's barrel to propel a magnetic slug down the barrel at tremendous velocities. The Duranium-core round is forced into the chamber by a strong spring in the insulated magazine, and with each trigger pull the power supplied to three coils surrounding the barrel is switched on and off in a precisely timed sequence, causing the projectile to be accelerated quickly along the barrel via magnetic forces. Once the chamber is clear and the power to the coils has disconnected, another round is forced into the chamber. The process is repeated once per trigger pull in a semi-automatic fashion, and three times on burst-fire mode. In fully-automatic mode, the process occurs thirty times per second, but due to the potential for overheating the magnetic coils, this is discouraged.

The PR-1 requires less power to fire than a contemporary directed-energy weapon, and is less likely to be affected when exposed to an energy dampening field. However, some loss of performance is to be expected in such conditions. Improper or extended use of the weapon can also contribute to overheating of the coil, leading to inefficiency and/or failure.
