1919 - The United States Air Service begins a trans-continental air race as a means of testing pilot and airplane reliablity over long periods of time and long distances. By the time the tests end on the 31st, seven airmen have died in the attempt.
1959 - Pioneer IV (the first US satellite to orbit the sun) probe reaches its farthest point from the sun.
