1889Astronomer Edwin Powell Hubble is born, considered the founder of extragalactic astronomy. He is noted being be the first to provider evidence of the expansion of the universe.
1979 – Artificial blood was first used in a patient by transfusion at the University of Minnesota Hospital. (The patient had refused a transfusion of real blood due to their religious beliefs.)
1984 – The SETI (Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence) Institute is founded. A not-for-profit research organization, its mission was to explore, understand, and explain the origin and nature of life in the universe, and to use this knowledge to inspire and guide present and future generations, sharing knowledge with the public, the press, and the government.
1998 – The first module of the International Space Station is launched.
