The Menk are far less evolved than the [[Valakian]]s, who have historically treated them as lower individuals. However, the Valakians provide the Menk with food, clothing, and other needs.
[[Human]]ity made first contact with the Menk in [[2151]], when the [[Enterprise, NX class Enterprise -01]] picked up a Valakian [[Valakianshuttle]] shuttle and returned them to their [[homeworld]]. They shuttle had left in search of help from more advanced species, where it was discovered in hopes that a genetic disorder was slowly wiping the others may be able to solve their cellular degeneration problem. ''Enterprise's'' [[ValakianDoctor|Dr.]]s out. When Dr. [[Phlox ]] was asked to help, he had a hunch the answer might be in the Menk's immunity to it.
