1897 - Physicist John Cockcroft is born. He, alongside Ernest Walton, won the Nobel Prize in 1951 for splitting the atom.
1919 - The first trans-Atlantic flight (from Newfoundland to Lisbon) is completed by US Navy NC-4 aircraft.
