1861 - The "Great Comet of 1861" is discovered by John Tebbutt of Windsor, New South Wales, Australia.
- The comet, formally designated "C/1861 J1" and "1861 II", is a long-period comet that was visible to the naked eye for approximately 3 months.
1982 - Soviet cosmonauts Anatoli Berezovoi and Valentin Lebedev are launched in Soyuz T-5 to rendezvous with Salyut 7 and become the first team to inhabit the space station.
