The matter engine was a crucial component of 23rd century Federation starships that partially regulated the interaction of matter and antimatter within the ship's matter-antimatter reaction assembly. The matter engine contained the matter necessary for the reaction to occur. Matter in the engine reached the matter injectors as a final step to entering the reaction assembly.
