| − | Following forty years of near-constant warfare, Star Fleet soon found itself stretched too thin across too many fronts to be able to provide adequate convoy protection, as Destroyers and Frigates were necessary on the front lines, [[Cicero-class]] Escorts were in too short supply to provide adequate protection and [[F-1]] and [[A-1]] Starfighters lacked the range to escort convoys through contested regions. In response to the issues, Star Fleet Logistics Command decided to look to the past for inspiration, and were met with the Ju'Day/Condor-class Couriers that had become notorious for their use as smuggling vessels or armed raiders by the [[Maquis]]. The Ju'Day/Condor-class had been designed as an armed Light Freighter with firepower equal to most Frigates in order to deter pirates, and fit the requirements perfectly. Though the spaceframes selected were over half a century old by the time they were selected, the actions of the converted Freighter 'Renegade' under the command of then-Captain [[Braggins, Paul|Paul Braggins]] proved the concept. Dozens of Ju'day/Condors were converted to what would be called the 'Renegade-type' with the classification of 'Gunboat' as their mission had changed from freight hauling to convoy protection. Improvements in automation technology reduced the crew requirements by half, and up-to-date weapons, engines and sensor systems were installed to ensure that the Renegades could stand up to most pirates, although no Renegade could go toe-to-toe with a true warship and expect to emerge victorious without suffering heavy damage in the process.

| − | In addition to convoy escort, Renegades have proven effective as scout craft and landing craft for Marine platoons and are used in these roles when more specialised craft are unavailable or where more discretion is required. Recently more modular configurations have made available to fill the gaps left by Star Fleet's need for fully-fledged Starships to operate at the fringes of Federation Space. Ranging from Patrol and Customs variants to Troop Carriers and Medical Transports, these vessels are still a relatively rare sight in Federation Space, but they perform vital duties that free up larger vessels for operations elsewhere.
