The 'Lanthanum-class Science Escort is a Star Fleet starship class, of escort type.
History
The Lanthanum-class science escort was developed to serve the purpose of allowing for short-medium range exploration and scientific operations. The class is well equipped for these missions and has sufficient capability to complete these missions. Major Starbases and planets may have 2-3 of these stationed. The vessel has 2 decks, including a science/medical lab and other needed services for mid-range missions.
The Lanthanum-class, because of its small size lacks many amenities that larger ships have. These include having only sonic showers, limited replicator stations and rationing on longer missions, group bunking for all except the CO/FO in the starboard barracks of up to 11 person each. The port barracks has been converted into a small mess hall. Unlike the Cicero-class which shares this hull, the Lanthanum class has expanded labs in the forward "common room" section and also has enhancements to its sensors. It is also equipped to operate in high-pressure environments such as gas giant atmosphere and underwater for extended periods via enhanced external environmental shielding.
The 'lab' in the front section has advanced holographic displays (not full holodeck level with tactical because of power requirements) and advanced quantum replicators making it an advanced science lab.
The Lathanaum-class is also outfitted for sub-aquatic use. It has deployable fins and can use its thrusters to propel itself under water. Under water it can achieve a speed of up to 100kph, and can sustain double that on the water surface.
The Lanthanum-class are named for the rare earth elements of the periodic table.
It can be docked in the place where a Captain's yacht normally is on a capital ship, meaning it would then replace the yacht.
Registration numbers are prefixed with "ESS-" and a 5-digit registration number which starts with the numbers "19" and the 3-digit number of the element, e.g. the USS Promethium would be "ESS-19061".
