A group commander (or GC) is a military title usually given to an officer that commands a number of different units or vessels.

Star Fleet

In the Federation Star Fleet, a group commander referred to an officer that had operational control of one or more battle/exploration groups. The group commander was a flag officer, usually of commodore or rear admiral rank who typically commanded his own starship within the group. The GC's starship served as the flagship of that group.

It may also refer to a ground-based commander in charge of a Platoon of troops not necessarily in his/her department.
