The first Ferengi to enter Starfleet, young Nog was raised mainly by his not-so-bright father Rom, and intelligent-yet-devious Uncle Quark. During the Cardassian occupation of Bajor space, Quark opened a restaurant & bar on the space station [[Terok Nor]], and both Rom and Nog started to work for Quark. When the Federation took the station and installed Commander Sisko, Nog became friends with Sisko’s son of a similar age, Jake. They roamed the station together and played pranks on its visitors, often getting in trouble with Constable Odo. Worried about the Ferengi’s influence on his son, Commander Sisko barred Jake from hanging out with Nog, until he realized that Jake was teaching Nog how to read, a skill that Ferengi culture did not place at a high value.
