Personal History
Varil was born on Trill to two wealthy, intelligent Trill families. His father was a prominent scientist, and his mother had long had a hand in the Symbiosis Commission.
Growing up, Varil was pushed to excel to prepare him for a possibly joining. However, despite pressure from his parents and sister, Varil never found himself wanting a symbiote. There was nothing wrong with them. He understood that joined Trill were an integral part of the culture, and were insanely useful in many instances. In fact, Varil had first hand experiences with their usefulness in his mother and sister - who were both joined - but it simply just wasn't for Varil. So, upon graduating from medical school, he did not apply to the program, and instead he sought out something else for him to apply himself to.
He realized that pressure to join the program all his life had left him with little room to decide who he was. After much deliberation within himself, he decided to join Star Fleet, interestingly making him the first person in his immediate family to actually leave Trill for any extended period of time.
Varil continued his pattern of excelling at the academy, and found himself enthused by the novel surroundings. He loved it. In fact he couldn't wait to get out into space and carry out the duties of a Star Fleet Officer, to be able to make a wider difference.
This excitement lasted even once he was assigned to a ship. For quite a while, he worked diligently and enjoyed the exciting life in space, even earning commendations.
It wasn't until the end of a routine visit to a planet where things went awry. For some reason - unexplained to this day - the ship had been having trouble with its transport systems. The away team - of which Varil was a part of - was forced to take a shuttle down to the planet to carry out the mission.
On the return route, the shuttle malfunctioned as well. As they left the atmosphere and entered space, there was an explosion that severely injured all on board. The crew on the main ship tried, in vain, to transport the crew off of the shuttle, but only managed to transport Varil and one other crew member, who later succumbed to her injuries.
Varil spent a significant amount of time recuperating, even being sent back to Trill to have his family attempt to alleviate some of his pain. While he had been healed physically, numerous psychological problems remained, not the least including survivor’s guilt and a new fear of space travel.
However, after a while, Varil became sick of feeling useless. He understood that it would be difficult to go out in space for him, but he decided to find a new way of being use to Star Fleet, to continue to make a difference. Despite his parents’ and sister’s insistence that he remain on Trill, he steeled himself and traveled back to earth where he applied to be an academy instructor. After passing the necessary psychological evaluations, he was accepted. It is his wish that, even if he never really recovers from the emotional trauma, at least he's still helping by preparing the next generation.
