A biocontainment field is a type of force field used for containment of infectious or hazardous materials aboard Federation starships.
A bio-containment field would be used in Sickbay when there’s a need to keep a patient or specimen separate from the rest of the crew in case of contagious disease, or when a patient requires a specific environment to live.
In Engineering, it would be used for the transfer of dangerous materials or containers.
Science would use a bio-containment field for experiments where hazardous substances are being tested or used.
A bio-containment field can be activated manually or by the computer with the detection of extremely hazardous substances, and can only be deactivated manually.
