Events
- Loomis, a worker at a blood donor clinic in Detroit, abducts people for a group of Xindi-Reptilians who have traveled from the 22nd century to secretly develop a bioweapon to wipe out Humanity. Captain Jonathan Archer and T'Pol, also from the 22nd century, manage to stop the Xindi before the weapon is completed. Loomis is arrested by local law enforcement.
- SpaceShipOne performs its first successful spaceflight on September 29. Five days later, on October 4, SpaceShipOne wins the Burt Rutan Ansari X Prize for private spaceflight by being the first private craft to fly into space.
- October 4 – Death of Leroy Gordon Cooper, Jr., American astronaut. Cooper was one of the seven original astronauts in Project Mercury, the first manned space effort by the United States. He was the first American to sleep in orbit and the last to be launched alone into Earth orbit and conduct an entire solo orbital mission.
- October 7 – Hotel magnate Robert Bigelow establishes the America's Space Prize, offering $50 million to the first US-based privately-funded team to design and build a reusable manned capsule capable of flying 5 astronauts to a Bigelow Aerospace inflatable space module.
