Before he left for Starfleet Academy, though, his father gave him the family heirloom: A Starfleet Type 1 Phaser circa 2260. It was a family heirloom that, according to his great grandfather's will, was given to each and every young man or woman who joined Starfleet. In order to continue on with this tradition, Jake tried, and successfully brought it on board, and hid it in his quarters, hoping to this day no one would know and find out about it, seeming as it might be a violation of Starfleet regulations. |History=Jake was born on [[Earth ]] to a family of two, becoming the third addition to the family. He was delivered at a small hospital in Scotland, near his parents' farm. His family were part of a small village of mostly agricultural workers, and so he spent a lot of his early childhood at the farm, learning a lot about hard work and labor. Often he would go mountain climbing with David Turner, his best friend. Once they got lost, but managed to make camp before they were located and rescued about 3 hours later, after which Jake was given a very harsh scolding. When he reached 9, his parents had saved up enough money to send him to a local school, where he got picked on a lot because of his weak social skills. Surprisingly, he was actually never really bothered by them, and instead proved himself in his school's exams, gaining lots of awards and certificates. However, he never actually made many friends other than David. When he was 13, unfortunately, he finally snapped and got into a small fight at school, and while not severe enough to damage any properties, did get him a small reprimand. While he was not expelled, though, his parents felt it would be best for him to leave school and instead go homeschooled. He accepted the decision and continued to work at the farm, receiving tuition from a local friend. He was also very interested particularly in combat and war history as well as weapons, which was what got him interested in the security position.
His father had told him a story before when he was 14, about a half-brother related to his side. His father told of a previous engagement, but he had divorced from his previous wife while she was still pregnant with Antonio, leading to his unsureness about whether the pregnancy was successful or not. Jake's interest had been piqued by that story, and always hoped that one day he might uncover the tale and meet Antonio.
At the age of 15, an unidentified mine exploded near his house, severely wounding and killing a few civilians. Jake's father was also hospitalised, and though any life-threatening injuries were neutralised, he still walks with a limp. During a police interrogation, Jake's father finally revealed that he had been running from a debt that he had incurred from some [[Orion ]] pirates when obtaining several rare earth antiques, including a Smith & Wesson Model 10 revolver.
He also rescued a rather large band of scientists on an expedition near his village before. The band had been collecting underground rock samples on their local mountain when the collector malfunctioned and blew up a bridge nearby, their only way to leave the mountain. Upon their village hearing this, Jake was tasked with bringing them food and to repair the bridge. The endeavour was successful, and he received a commendation for what he did.
Due to mishandling of a lighter when he was 15 and a half, he had accidentally set a nearby grove on fire. Many people came to help, however some way or other, he had become trapped in the grove, and could only be rescued 3 hours after. He had many burns and nearly died because of the intense smoke coming from burning green vegetation, which was what led to his fear of fire. To this day, whenever he encounters bonfires or torches or any other flame-producing item, he chooses to stand a safe distance back. In extreme cases, he can even faint.
He got into the Academy via a visiting Starfleet officer in his village. His time at the Academy, however, was far more interesting than any of his previous experiences. He was a very punctual student, and loved taking walks through the academy campus. He did find it hard to make friends, but nevertheless got through the academy exams with flying colors.
