The Teplans are a warp-capable species from the Gamma Quadrant. Due to   Once a great civilization, their resistance against the Dominion in earned them unwanted attention. In the mid-22nd centuryCentury, the Jem'Hadar infected the Teplans with a Blight that was incurable.   The terrible disease infected everyone, including children who were still in the womb. Most people died from the Blight, with few infected children able to reach adulthood. The final stage of the disease was incredibly painful, as the Blight "quickened" and destroyed their body.  After generations of these conditions, their technology had been all but lost, with their population declining at a dangerous rate. Their culture became obsessed with death, and the easing of pain, rather than any kind of forward progress. Any medical professional that remained were only able to offer little more than relief from the pain of Quickening and a clean, warm bed to die in.  In 2372, Doctor Julian Bashir was able to develop an inoculation that would prevent future generations from catching the Blight.
