Personal History: Danni was born Ruth Danielle Merez on a small farm in Iowa. Her parents, Sarah Godwin Merez and Jesu Merez were an unlikely combination of ex-Quaker and Mexican Catholic, and hold very strict ideas of morality and behavior, as well as very strong religious beliefs. The Merez family bought a farm in a retro-community in Iowa, dedicated to self sufficiency and biblical principles.
The Merez boys stayed close to the farm, but Danni always wanted to wander. Growing up, she was never the girl her parents wanted, taking more interest in the animals, exploring, and hanging out with her brother's friends than sewing, cooking, and house keeping. Disappointed, in their daughter's tomboy ways, Sarah and Jesu decided to try for more daughters, hoping that positive role models and more femininity in the house would help their daughter behave more like a young lady.
By the time Danni hit high school, she had abandoned her name, Ruth, and was going by the shortened version of her middle name. The other kids instinctively rejected her, and Danni rebelled by engaging in whatever mischief she could get away with. She also learned to fight and to develop a thick skin when it came to her peers, who treated her as a total outsider. When Danni was 15 she announced to her parents that she was gay, and cut her hair off in defiance of the family. The family attempted to keep Danni's homosexuality secret for as long as they could, but Danni persisted in "being herself" in school, attracting the attention of the students, teachers, and finally the community leaders.
Danni's parent's disavowed her in the community, although they have never given up hope that she will return to what they perceived as a proper lifestyle and salvation. The community, which continues to pray for her sexual conversion and return to the standards they had adopted, decided not to totally shun Danni, but to try to encourage her back in order to "heal" her of her sexual preferences.
