==Challenges==

The following are guidelines only:

The first thing: combat on a Klingon ship is a finely tuned and precise tool, not a club. Used correctly, one achieves position and power. Used incorrectly and one is subject to mercy, or lack thereof, of one's superior. On a Klingon ship, violence is a part of life, but as with any culture, there are codes of conduct for when and where. Klingon culture has the most complex set of codes of any other, but they do exist.
The simplest code is for taking a position on the bridge (or in any operations section of the ship). Challenging a fellow Klingon for the right to take a certain station should not under any circumstances turn into a brawl. If the one challenged can be knocked down by the challenger, or acknowledges the challenger's superiority, then the challenger has earned the right to take that station; if not, he or she needs to go elsewhere.

Where one Klingon takes offense at another Klingon's words or actions are not occasions that justify challenges to the death. It is advisable to wait for a convenient time (i.e. not during a battle) to initiate a combat challenge. It is also inadvisable to make the challenge in ways that could infer it is to the death (see below). Drawing a blade in this kind of combat challenge is acceptable, as long as the intent is not to kill the opponent.

The Honor Challenge, the only one that can lead to the death without repercussions. It is not common practice for Honor Challenges to be satisfied by anything other than death of one of those involved. Sometimes, however, the victory blow is not a deadly one, if the winner chooses to show mercy. Honor challenges can be made for only two reasons on a Klingon vessel. First, when cowardice or weakness is seen in a superior officer, and can only be made by those directly beneath him or her in the chain of command. Second, the vItay (vee-tie'), the test of innocence or guilt. This occurs when one Klingon accuses another of crime or treachery, but there is no proof of guilt. The accused may challenge the accuser to the test as proof of innocence. The theory being that the innocent will prevail.

Methods of challenging one to the death are also various. One example is to strike the one challenged with a backhanded punch. Another is to stab a knife into the table in front of the one challenged. In order to accept this challenge, the challenged removes the blade from the table, as any honorable Klingon would do. Failure to do so may bring about instant death as opposed to combat. This type of challenge may also be performed with blunted bat'leths so as to prevent the deaths of good warriors, especially during war time when the Empire needs all they can get.

Violation of these codes is punishable, and often fatal, if a Klingon is killed without provocation or justification. Punishment is at the discretion of the violator's superior or CO.

It should be noted that any Honor Challenges or vItay combats that are intended to result in the death of a PC or Registered NPC need to be part of a CO approved subplot.
