| History=A deeply religious man, Yan grew up as the son of preachers in the fields of Rakantha Province on Bajor. Never knowing any real luxuries, he spent most of his youth assisting in the temple where his mother and father both provided a range of services to their community. As Yan grew older, his aspirations to leave the sanctity of the temple gardens and explore grew as well, and by the time he was sixteen had started to look at ways he could fund an expedition off world to see the stars and one day meet the Prophets for himself.

With little taste for the Bajoran military and without the prejudices of the Cardassian occupation that had wracked his people before him, Yan managed to secure an apprenticeship on board a freight vessel as a navigator. He had found a passion for stellar cartography and astrometrics, and soon enough he was mapping out new routes and shortcuts that more than paid for his tutelage over the next few years.

By the time Yan was in early 20s, he had travelled further across the Federation than most serving officers. He had transferred to a bigger ship, earning a better wage (though almost all of it went back to his temple at Rakantha) and it was here that he met the Winterburn family. He struck up a friendship with Laurence, a man some years his junior but busy studying for his Academy entrance exams. Laurence failed his application on the first attempt, and it was here that Yan found his calling as a tutor. By the time the second round of exams came round, he'd already decided to sit the exam with Laurence, and though their paths diverged at this point (Yan majoring in the Sciences whilst Laurence in Tactical) they both kept in touch.
Yan was somewhat older than most of his peers, and as such many of the other students in his class came to him for advice and help on their assignments. As the final years of the academy drew to a close he knew that he had satisfied his urge to explore, and after a brief stint as an Ensign aboard a small scout ship he took up an instructor post at the Academy. The Prophets seemed to have a plan for him, and it would be preparing others for a life among the stars. <br>
