With war starting to break out between the Federation and the Krynar, Starfleet all but begged capable medical personnel to serve aboard starships. Pressure began to build for Samantha to leave command of her little post in the Southern United States, but she was steadfast in her belief that she belonged planetside. After the brass was through begging people, orders began to ship out, and paperwork of that kind was soon sitting on Dr. Fritz’s desk. With promise from Starfleet that her home and practice would still stand when she got back, Fritzy accepted the posting. Starfleet made sure that Samantha was posted on a ship much like the one she had been before, this time the USS Dauntless.
Though the design of the Dauntless mirrored that of the Ticonderoga, Samantha found few other things similar. A Klingon was in charge, not her lover, and she was not treating simple ship's plasma burns. A simple mission curdled in the heart of Sickbay; while the crew raced to find a kidnapped Captain, Fritzy raced to find the cure of a deadly disease that was spreading throughout the ship. She was able to complete research on what she found was called the Rigellian Hydro-Flu, but could not find anything resembling a cure. It was a genetically-engineered weapon that so far could be controlled by isolating the cases and, to Fritzy's dismay, letting them die. Failing to save the victims was coupled with a promotion by Starfleet in what Samantha saw as a cruel joke, and she was instated as a full Lieutenant when the Dauntless crew finally recovered Captain Torgh. Her first act as official Chief Medical Officer was to sign the death notices resulting from the deadly virus. After Torgh's kidnapping and rescue, a select number of the crew set out to seek what was explicitly “not revenge.” Fritzy's duty, along with her nurse and the Science officers, was to develop a “back-up plan” in case Torgh and the Away Team's mission was partly unsuccessful. This resulted in the CMO yet again doubting herself as a medical professional, as their solution had been to develop controllable biological weapons. Though the physical weapons were lost when the classified ship Apparition was destroyed, the files had already been on their way to Starfleet. When most of the ship's complement were lost, Fritzy again wondered how she was going to word the death notices. Returned to the nearest Starbase, Fritz immediately went to work in their Sickbay, trying to heal as many sick as she could, and atone for her wrongdoings on-board the Apparition.
