|Friends= Best Friend: Isaac Cole, nephew of Martin’s father figure Warren, and the best man at Martin and Sarah’s wedding. Isaac also accompanied Martin on his travels to Klingon space, and taught Martin to speak the Klingon language.
After just over 2 years abroad in Klingon space with Isaac, Martin returned to Earth again, for the wedding of his mother to prominent political advisor George Rathbone. From his mother’s marriage, Martin gained a supportive stepfather in George, and a younger sibling, his new stepsister Lauren. He also gained two little nieces, Mary and Lucy, and a nephew, Thomas. All three are very fond of “Uncle Marty”, and look forward to his visits. After the wedding, Martin and Isaac decided to revisit Klingon space, and spent 2 years there, only to be attacked by Klingon raiders on his return, suffering severe burns on his right arm and leg while pulling Isaac to safety, which he chose to keep, as a reminder that sacrifices must always be made. While recovering Martin served as a guest lecturer at the Daystrom Institute for 3 years, and resolved that upon recovery, he would join Starfleet, in order to continue his research in safety, and to promote peaceful, cooperative sharing of culture and information by all species.
==First Assignment, USS Dauntless== ===First Mission- Yadalla Prime=== After graduating from Starfleet Academy, Martin was assigned to the USS Dauntless, CA-1553, under the command of Nathaniel Lornak. Martin spent his first mission in Sickbay, where with the help of a senior medical crewman, the captain, and Sarah, of all people, he managed to find a cure for a mysterious illness that was plaguing the Romulans on Yadalla Prime. This was accompanied by the shocking discovery that Sarah had done work for Starfleet Intelligence, and she had been working with them when she was killed.  He was awarded the Starfleet Commendation Medal and Leonard McCoy Lifesaving Cross for his work, and was incredibly happy with the impression he made on the captain and crew. However, this did not last long, as Captain Lornak departed the ship for Acamar, his homeworld, leaving Commander Theo Caldecott as acting captain.  During his first shore leave, Martin met his Department Head, Lieutenant Lancepaul Starnault, a bright young man who seemed to have found a father figure in Martin. These feelings were mutual, as Martin considered Lancepaul to be the son he had always wanted. Martin had a great respect for Lance, as he reminded him of himself as a young man.  ===Second Mission- Celes II=== Martin was happy to return to duty after shore-leave, especially on the simple, low-risk mission of transporting an Ambassador and his assistant to Celes II, to participate in negotiations with the Klingons. Undoubtedly, he was surprised when the city of Paris was attacked shortly after Dauntless left Starbase Bravo. The attack was centered on the office of the Federation President, who was killed in the assault. Unable to do anything from their current location, Dauntless was ordered to continue their current mission, under the command of Captain Torgh, a Klingon with an interesting past.  Martin was tasked with collecting samples of copper-based blood from Sickbay, and as he made his way there with two other officers, the ship was attacked, ambushed by a Klingon Bird-of-Prey, and Torgh was kidnapped, along with one of the diplomats. The crew was left under the command of Theo Caldecott. Marty and his colleagues survived the attack with minor injuries, and made it to Sickbay intact. He then witnessed a murder-suicide, right after recovering. To make matters worse, he then combated an outbreak of Rigellian Hydro-flu, along with Lancepaul, Chief Medical Officer Fritz, and two young doctors, Norgin and Sullivan. Martin and Lance were then summoned to the bridge, where, after Martin received an impromptu field promotion to Ensign, they assisted in identifying and retrieving the Captain, in a makeshift escape pod of his own creation. ===Third Mission- U.S.S. Apparition=== Martin’s next mission on the Dauntless would prove somewhat disastrous. Assigned to the U.S.S. Apparition as part of a skeleton crew, he headed into Klingon space. While initially excited, the mission – a “simple” data extraction from an intelligence base, which was then to be destroyed – was a success only in the most technical respect, as the crew sustained several causalities and the Apparition was lost. Most notably was the loss of Lancepaul Starnault, who had been in temporary command of the Apparition, before leading it into a 3 on 1 fight with Klingon birds of prey. ==Sabbatical - Back to Earth==After the Apparition, Martin was left shaken. It wasn’t the first time he had been in a life-or-death situation in Klingon space, but this time there had been more than just his own life on the line. Lance had been almost a surrogate son to him, and he began to suffer occasional flashbacks to his own harrowing shuttle raid. Martin also felt guilty for what had happened to Lance, because he had spent a fair deal of time telling stories of his own exploits in Klingon space, as a younger man. Shortly after a promotion to Lieutenant Junior Grade, meeting Lance’s replacement, and the start of Dauntless’ next mission, Martin briefly went AWOL before resigning and returning to Earth, taking the old saying “It’s better to beg forgiveness than to ask permission” to heart, where he was immediately greeted with bad news. His mother had passed suddenly, shortly before his arrival. He decided not to return to Starfleet, taking time to grieve, and finish his book, though he never tried to publish it. Initially more than happy to not re-enlist, Martin was searching for teaching or research positions on Earth, but quickly grew bored. His mother's second husband George, and Warren and Isaac Cole were still supportive, and Martin loved spending time with Lauren and her children, but he felt as though there was nothing new or exciting for him to do on Earth, so he decided to reapply to Starfleet Academy, and earn a second chance.   Martin had chosen an interesting time to return to Earth, as the outbreak of the Krynar war provided a new opportunity. Choosing not to re-join Starfleet, he contributed to the war efforts as a civilian, treating the injured as they returned home. Towards the end of the war he decided to focus his efforts on this full-time, eventually earning certification as a combat medic. After the war had ended and the last wave of injured treated, Martin returned to life as an academic. |Majors=Anthropology, Xenology , Archaeology (During Remedial Training)
