|Friends= [[Keva Butler]].
|History= In 2380, the Ferengi ship Karatcha encountered an unknown subspace phenomenon, throwing them into the farthest reaches of the Beta Quadrant, just beyond the reaches of explored space. Obeying rule of acquisition number 9 (Opportunity plus instinct equals profit), the crew decided to capitalize on their situation, negotiating backroom deals with multiple organizations while hiding from various hostile forces. One such deal brought the Karatcha within scanning distance of a planet rich in iridium in 2403, where a strange power signature was detected. Upon further exploration, the crew found a stasis chamber deep underground, containing what appeared to be a fourteen year old human male. Upon ending the stasis period, the chamber self destructed, much to the chagrin of the Ferengi, who hoped to exploit the technology. Thinking they could still make a profit by returning the apparent human to his home, the Ferengi "adopted" the human child until they could secure passage back to the Alpha Quadrant. Mitsein (the referred to simply as "Gren") was raised as a servant to his new Ferengi masters for several years, forced to perform menial tasks and use his apparent innocence to help "negotiate" better deals and secure cheaper access to new routes home.
Finally, in 2408, the Ferengi managed to negotiate a deal to gain access to scavenged pieces of a Hirogen vessel, using the parts to upgrade their ship and enter a transwarp conduit. Barely arriving in one piece, the Karatcha limped back into Federation boundaries. Finding the Alpha Quadrant in a much worse state than when they left, the crew dropped Mitsein off at the first Federation outpost, where he was examined by Federation doctors and found to not be human at all, but a surgically and genetically altered Eska. Despite having no memories, apart from flashes and dreams, Mitsein possessed an abundant knowledge of quantum mechanics, technology and biomechanics. How he came to have this knowledge is unknown. He has a great interest in Earth's early 20th century, though he cannot say why. Once the Ferengi realized that there was no profit to be gained from Mitsein's "return," they tried to retake the now 19 year old man, claiming he owed them a debt. The federation refused to allow this, and offered Mitsein passage to earth. After making his way to earth, Mitsein spent the next few years researching and preparing to join Starfleet, hoping to discover more about himself and his purpose in life.
During his time in the academy, Mitsein made few friends, finding social interaction difficult, and often counterproductive. He received top marks in several courses, however, and found himself becoming good friends with a classmate (and, later, instructor) named Keva Butler. For whatever reason, the two rather timid personalities clicked, and the two formed a bond before each graduated and left for their new assignments. Mitsein’s first assignment brought him to the Chin’ Toka, serving as a junior science officer. Once again, he found it difficult to establish relationships with his coworkers, but over the course of his first missions, he found himself relaxing while completing his assigned tasks. On one particular away mission, Mitsein even found himself joking around with his crewmates, and realized that perhaps there was a purpose to comraderie.

During a battle with the Krynar, Mitsein’s sense of his own self changed abruptly, as he experienced what he realized was the first hint of his Eska hunting instincts. Seeking guidance and understanding, Mitsein resigned his post aboard the Chin’ Toka, and left, furloughing at Starbase Delta. There, he spoke with his former captain, and talked to his old friend Keva, who suggested that he pursue a slightly different avenue within Starfleet. Mitsein enrolled in a series of tactical and leadership courses, breezing through them without ever leaving Starbase Delta. Then, in a somewhat unusual move, Mitsein found himself reassigned to his former ship, this time as Chief Tactical Officer.
