Ben Sisko joined [[Starfleet Academy ]] in [[2350]], where he studied to be an Engineer. Shortly after graduating, he met his first wife Jennifer, and their son Jake was born soon after they were married. Receiving a posting as [[First Officer]] on the ‘‘USS Saratoga’’''USS Saratoga'', the ship was called to assignment in [[2367]], where Jennifer died at the [https://memory-alpha.fandom.com/wiki/Battle_of_Wolf_359 Battle of Wolf 359]. Devastated over the loss of his wife, Sisko came close to resigning from Starfleet.

After riding the desk for a while, an old Captain of Sisko’s nominated him for a command position, and he was subsequently put in charge of an old Cardassian mining station, [[Terok Nor]]. Newly minted “"[[Deep Space 9]],” " it was to be Sisko’s Sisko's job to prepare the [[Bajoran ]] people for admission into the United Federation of Planets. Due to either the mixed crowd, his grieving emotional state, or a combination of both, Sisko’s command style was rather rough: he used blackmail and physical violence to ensure peace on the commerce-heavy [[star base]].

While overseeing the operations of DS-9, Benjamin Sisko grew to regard his officers as his friends, and was pleased to see his old friend [https://memory-alpha.fandom.com/wiki/Curzon_Dax Curzon Dax] in a new [[Trill ]] [[symbiont ]] body join the crew. A proponent of his father’s New Orleans-style cooking, Ben Sisko had often helped out his father in his restaurant “Sisko’s Creole Kitchen,” and did his best to pass on his love of cooking to his son, Jake. Other hobbies included building model ships and playing the sport of baseball, which his friends did not fully understand. The one person he found did understand and love baseball as he did was freighter Captain Kasidy Yates, and they struck up a fast friendship. They would later marry, and then quickly find out she was pregnant.

When the [https://memory-alpha.fandom.com/wiki/Dominion_War [Dominion War]] broke out, Sisko and DS-9 found themselves in the forefront of it, as Dominion forces began coming through the [[Bajoran wormhole ]] on a regular, weekly basis. The Cardassians [[Cardassian]]s managed to take back control of the station during what would become known as the [https://memory-alpha.fandom.com/wiki/Second_Battle_of_Deep_Space_9 [Second Battle of Deep Space 9|Second Battle for Deep Space 9]], though Sisko promised he and the Federation would return. At least two years later, after the [https://memory-alpha.fandom.com/wiki/Battle_of_Cardassia [Battle of Cardassia]], Sisko and his old crew met up one last time before their re-assignments. Sisko himself chose to travel to the [https://memory-alpha.fandom.com/wiki/Fire_Caves Bajoran Fire Caves], and sacrifice himself in order to save the Bajoran people from the ill-intended beings known as the [https://memory-alpha.fandom.com/wiki/Pah-wraith [Prophets|Pah-wraiths]].

A child of the [[Occupation of Bajor|Cardassian occupation]], Nerys grew up in a refugee camp on [[Bajor]]. She was often a troublemaker, and growing up in the shadow of [[Cardassian ]] rule influenced her decision to join the battle for Bajoran independence. When the Cardassians [[Cardassian]]s withdrew in [[2369]], she was assigned with the Bajoran military to be a liaison officer for [[Benjamin Sisko]]. With the station now being out of orbit of the planet, Kira initially disagreed with the Federation presence, but relented during the discovery of the wormhole, and her subsequent realization of its importance to the Bajoran people.

Orthodox in her beliefs in the [https://memory-alpha.fandom.com/wiki/Prophet [Prophets|Bajoran Prophets]], Kira Nerys was resolute in treating Ben Sisko with the utmost respect, as her people had dubbed him the “"[[https://memory-alpha.fandom.com/wiki/Emissary_of_the_Prophets Prophets#The Emissary|Emissary of the Prophets]” ]" as he had spoken with unknown aliens that resided inside the Bajoran wormhole. Less formal relationships included “frenemy” shopkeeper Quark, close friend Odo, and best friend Jadzia Dax (a friendship which carried on to the next [https://memory-alpha.fandom.com/wiki/Dax_[Dax (symbiont) |Dax symbiont]]).

When the Cardassians retook Deep Space 9, then-Major Kira stayed on the station as a representative of the Bajoran Government. The Cardassians reinstated Terek Nor’s [[Terok Nor]]’s old commander, [https://memory-alpha.fandom.com/wiki/Dukat [Dukat]], whom Kira knew and hated from the previous Cardassian occupation. She secretly worked with others to thwart any [[Dominion ]] goings-on that she could. After the [https://memory-alpha.fandom.com/wiki/Battle_of_Cardassia Battle of Cardassia] and the [https://memory-alpha.fandom.com/wiki/Dominion_War Dominion War] was ended, Kira was put in charge of Deep Space 9 when Benjamin Sisko decided to take an extended Leave of Absence.

After arriving on [[Terok Nor]], he was seen by Gul Dukat as an impartial outsider, and keen observer, and was recruited to settle disputes between the Bajoran workers and the Cardassian occupiers. His role on Terok Nor evolved into that of [[Chief of Security]], which he continued once the Federation liberated the space station and installed Benjamin Sisko as its commander. His title shifted to that of “Constable,” and continued to vye to keep order on the station. Under the control of Starfleet, Odo was able to grow as a person and make a few close friends. He was another “frenemy” of shopkeeper Quark, who once said of the Constable, “as Odo's worst enemy, I’m the closest thing the shapeshifter has to a friend!” The two carried on a great mutual respect for each other, and traded insults as way of showing affection. Although he didn’t fully understand himself as a being, Odo certainly knew romance. Constantly having to hide his feelings for friend Kira Nerys, he also had to keep back advancements from [https://memory-alpha.fandom.com/wiki/Lwaxana_Troi [Lwaxana Troi|Betazoid Ambassador Lwaxana Troi]], who was simply infatuated with him.

Due to being a shape-shifter later formally known as “[https://memory-alpha.fandom.com/wiki/[Changeling Changelings]]s,” Odo could only stay in a solid state for a number of hours. His natural form was that of a gelatinous puddle, and his quarters consisted of very little decoration or furnishing save [https://memory-alpha.fandom.com/wiki/Odo%27s_bucket his bucket]. In [[2371]], the Changelings were discovered, also to be revealed as the “[[Founder]]s,” and the driving antagonistic force behind the [[Dominion]]. He had a tumultuous relationship with the Founders, due to their now-antagonist and resentful nature of “solids,” who historically feared, hated, and hunted them due to their abilities. Though he learned of the history, he still did not understand or agree with the arrogance and ruthlessness that each Founder seemed to possess.

Worf, son of Mogh, was no stranger to the conflict of war. Orphaned as a child due to [https://memory-alpha.fandom.com/wiki/Khitomer_Massacre Romulan attacks on his colony], he was adopted by a Starfleet petty officer, and raised him along his own on the farming colony of [https://memory-alpha.fandom.com/wiki/Gault_colony Gault]. He became the first Klingon to join Starfleet, and served on both the [https://memory-alpha.fandom.com/wiki/USS_Enterprise_([USS Enterprise, NCC-1701-D) |Enterprise-D]] and [https://memory-alpha.fandom.com/wiki/USS_Enterprise_([USS Enterprise, NCC-1701-E) |Enterprise-E]], firming his reputation as a strong and able-bodied [[Security Officer]].

Worf was assigned to Deep Space 9 at Commander Sisko’s request: when the [[Klingons ]] invaded [[Cardassia ]] in [[2372]], the Federation-Klingon treaty looked as if that could be in trouble, as well. Klingons began harassing the inhabitants of Deep Space 9, and Sisko requested the Klingon officer’s help under the reasoning, “The only people who can really handle Klingons are Klingons.” After the Klingons failed to defeat the Cardassian government with Federation protections, the head of the [[Klingon High Council ]] became enraged, and withdrew from the Klingon-Federation peace treaty (the [https://memory-alpha.fandom.com/wiki/Khitomer_Accords Khitmer Accord[Khitomer Accords]]). Torn between his Klingon culture and his loyalty to the Federation, Sisko and Worf had a heart-to-heart, in which Sisko offered Worf the position of Strategic Operations Office on DS-9. Unlike his post as Chief of Security on board the ‘‘Enterprise''Enterprise,’’ '' Worf was tasked with keeping track of all Starfleet activities within the Bajoran sector.

Not seeming to enjoy mingling with others, Worf did not make any fast friends on Deep Space 9. Throughout his time there, he carried on a mistrust for the popular shopkeeper Quark, and went so far as to take up residence in the space station’s personal mini-starship the [https://memory-alpha.fandom.com/wiki/USS_Defiant_(2370) [USS Defiant]] when things got too much for him. He stayed close to people that knew him, or would understand him: Miles O’Brien, a friend from his time on the ‘‘Enterprise''Enterprise-D,’’ '' Benjamin Sisko, who acted as the Klingon’s mentor, and Jadzia Dax, whose previous [[Symbiont|symbiont host ]] had spent much time with Klingons, and whose name (Curzon) was known and honored among the Klingon people.

Jadzia Dax and Worf led a torrid love affair, starting when Jadzia “jumped” him, and carried on through their marriage during the Dominion War. In late [[2374]], the two decided to try for children, though they knew it would prove difficult due to their differing biology. They turned to Jadzia’s friend, and station doctor, Dr. Bashir for help. Feeling energized, inspired, and thankful, Jadzia decided to thank the Bajoran Prophets, for whatever good influence they had on this matter as a result of Kira Nerys’ praying. Before she can say her thanks, she is murdered by Gul Dukat, possessed by a [[Prophets|Pah-wraith]].

[[Curzon Dax|Dax (as Curzon) ]] first met Benjamin Sisko when the man was an [[Ensign]], and they continued their friendship into the Dax symbiont’s [[symbiont]]’s next host, Jadzia. Now a female science officer, the new Dax host had merged with her previous symbiont’s personalities and was a confident, lively woman with a great passion for all that life had to offer her. With the [[Dax (symbiont)|Dax symbiont ]] being hundreds of years old and residing in more than half a dozen hosts, Jadzia had a lot of personality. She loved music, fighting, and the [https://memory-alpha.fandom.com/wiki/Tongo Ferengi game of tongo].

On board the station, Jadzia Dax made a lot of friends. Including her close friendship with Benjamin Sisko, she enjoyed the company of devious shopkeeper Quark, flirty Dr. Bashir, gal pal Kira Nerys, a few boyfriends, a girlfriend who was the wife of a previous symbiont, and the easily-pranked Constable Odo. She also managed to befriend most , if not all Klingons , [[Klingon]]s that visited the station, sometimes making Worf’s informal job as Klingon wrangler harder rather than easier. Due to Curzon Dax’s many dealings with them, many seem to have considered her and others of the Dax symbiont an “honorary Klingon.”

Though Dr. Bashir was infatuated with her, Jadzia developed an appreciation and then romantic feelings for Worf instead. Like her previous host, Jadzia was said to have “the heart of a Klingon,” and spoke fluent Klingonese as well as carried on many traditions. She and Worf were married on Deep Space 9 in [[2374]], though they were separated from each other during the [[Dominion War]]. Dax went on to command the ‘‘Defiant’’ ''Defiant'' against the Dominion fleet, and was put in command of DS-9 during the [[First Battle of Chin'toka]]. When the [[Cardassian ]] [[Gul ]] [[Dukat ]] boarded the station and tried to sabotage the [[Bajoran Wormhole ]]during the battle, Jadzia died while trying to stop him from doing so.

One of his first friends on board Deep Space 9 was the [[Cardassian ]] tailor, Elim Garak. Bashir was fascinated by the man, and the man amused by Bashir, and they became friends. With a relationship bordering on flirtatious, they had a regular lunch reservation together. Convinced the Cardassian was a spy, Julian would always try to question Garak and trip him up, to which the Cardassian would just smile and tell the man a half-truth. Another flirtatious relationship was with Jadzia Dax, with whom he was in love with, but the woman did not share his amorous feelings. The person Julian was really best friends with, however, was Miles O’Brien, and spent so much time with the man that O’Brien’s wife was known to tease the two about it. They enjoyed many hobbies together, such as darts, holo-adventures, and the sport of racquetball.

The ninth host of the [[Dax (symbiont)|Dax symbiont]], Ezri met some friction when she came aboard Deep Space 9. The crew missed their dear friend Jadzia, and Ezri’s joining to Dax was done as an emergency procedure to save him. Her personality now totally changed, Ezri had left her posting on the ‘‘USS Destiny’’ ''USS Destiny'' to take a leave of absence and figure out who she was now that she was joined to Dax. Meeting with Ben Sisko to try and get a feel for Dax’s last host, Sisko asked Ezri to stay on DS-9 and become the station’s [[Counselor]].

Deciding against wanting to be joined, and so receiving no training as a result, Ezri was deeply conflicted when it came to separating her personality from those of her previous hosts. She wanted to be friends with those she met on the station, but could not always separate her feelings from those that had been Jadzia’s. On a positive note, this meant she was fast friends with Quark and Dr. Bashir, in addition to the multiple-life-long friendship with Ben Sisko. Worf at first would not speak to her, and then as they became friendly, their relationship became quite complicated, with them ending as friends, and Ezri encouraging Worf to take up the job as [[Klingon ]] [[Ambassador]].

Always looking out for Ezri was Dr. Julian Bashir, who also found he had a crush on this Dax hostas well. This time, the Dax host in question returned those feelings, though the two decided to not act on their emotions during the height of war. When this agreement quickly failed, as they shared a passionate kiss in a turbolift, they share a romantic night together on the eve of the [https://memory-alpha.fandom.com/wiki/Battle_of_Cardassia [Battle of Cardassia|Battle of Cardassia]] (What would be the final battle of the Dominion War).

The first Ferengi to enter Starfleet, young Nog was raised mainly by his not-so-bright father Rom, and intelligent-yet-devious Uncle Quark. During the [[Cardassian ]] occupation of [[Bajor ]] space, Quark opened a restaurant & bar on the space station [[Terok Nor]], and both Rom and Nog started to work for Quark. When the Federation took the station and installed Commander Sisko, Nog became friends with Sisko’s son of a similar age, Jake. They roamed the station together and played pranks on its visitors, often getting in trouble with Constable Odo. Worried about the Ferengi’s [[Ferengi]]’s influence on his son, Commander Sisko barred Jake from hanging out with Nog, until he realized that Jake was teaching Nog how to read, a skill that Ferengi culture did not place at a high value.

Nog enrolled herself in Keiko O’Brien’s school, later going on to attend [[Starfleet Academy]], despite both his father’s and uncle’s reservations. He had inherited his father’s [[engineering ]] skills, and assisted him when they did repairs for various things in Quark’s bar. This led to a friendship between Nog and Miles O’Brien, who worked closely with Nog’s father, Rom. Having to sponsor his application to Starfleet Academy, Commander Sisko developed a friendship with Nog as well. Previously only acquainted with him due to his friendship with Jake, Sisko appreciated Nog’s hard work ethic and dedication.

During the [[Dominion War]], now an Ensign, Nog [https://memory-alpha.fandom.com/wiki/Siege_of_AR-558 lost his left leg in battle with the Jem’Hadar]. Suffering from PTSD, he returned to DS-9 with an artificial leg, closing himself off from everyone and taking refuge in a holodeck program. [[Counselor ]] Ezri Dax was unable to help him, though she was able to note he was making physical progress. He was able to participate in the [[Second Battle of Chin'toka]], and stayed on DS-9 under the command of now-Colonel Kira Nerys.

I need my little girl to wake up in the morning and look up at me and see a man she can respect."]] At 17 years old, Miles O’Brien [[enlisted]] in [[Starfleet]], becoming an [[Engineer]] and participating in more than two-hundred battles, developing a hatred and racism for [[Cardassian]]s along the way. By the time he was assigned to DS-9, his racism had lessened, and had been with Starfleet for over 20 years. On the station, O’Brien found himself dealing with multiple problems every day, as [[Cardassian]], [[Bajoran]], and Federation technology were not meant to be combined and work together. The only thing Miles loved more than his job was his family: every time before going into a battle, he would record a “goodbye” message for them, believing each time that would be the one they would hear. He once described his marriage to Keiko as, “the greatest adventure of them all. It's filled with pitfalls and setbacks and mistakes, but it's a journey worth taking because you take it together.”  Miles’ closest friend on Deep Space 9 was Dr. Julian Bashir, starting with a friendly rivalry when each thought they were better at darts than the other. They often spent time in Quark’s bar & restaurant, and ran many holodeck programs with each other. Keiko was known to comment on the amount of time the two men spent together, with Miles once telling Julian that he was as important to him as Keiko was. Another person Miles considered himself close with was Lieutenant Worf, especially since Worf delivered Keiko’s first baby during an emergency on board the ''[[Enterprise-D]].'' Miles made it a point to be the first person to greet Worf, and was even a part of Worf’s wedding party.   Known to have many hobbies, Miles was also known for ending up in [[Sickbay]] because of them. Hiking, mountain climbing, kayaking, or holographic war reenactments - Miles suffered shoulder dislocations, humeral head fractures, and torn rotator cuffs. His establishment, ''Quark's Bar, Grill, Gaming House and Holosuite Arcade,'' was often used as a front for illegal activities, not that it wasn’t profitable in its own right. Opened in [[2363]] on then-[[Cardassian]] station [[Terok Nor]], he also sold food to the oppressed [[Bajoran]]s “under the table,” or [https://memory-alpha.fandom.com/wiki/Black_market on the black market.] He met Kira Nerys through his black market ways, as well as Constable Odo.   Once the Federation took over the space station and re-named it '''Deep Space 9,''' Commander Sisko was able to convince Quark to keep his restaurant (and perhaps his other dealings) open. “Quark’s Bar” or just “Quark’s” as it was commonly known, was a hit with the Federation, and continued to attract more or less the same clientele. Miles O’Brien and Dr. Bashir were often frequenters, taking up countless hours in the [[holodeck]]s (or “holosuites,” as Quark referred to them as). Other regulars at ''Quark’s'' included visiting [[Klingon]]s, Jadzia Dax, and regular customer Morn.   During the [[Dominion War]], when Deep Space 9 was re-taken by Dominion forces, Quark kept his bar & restaurant open. Thankful that the current occupation was not as violent as the previous [[Cardassian]]-led forces, he also couldn’t help but be happy at the amount of currency that was also flowing through. Quickly earning the enemy’s trust as bartender, he was able to feed information to the resistance cell that was on board DS-9. Using Quark’s information, Sisko was able to come up with "[[Operation Return]]," and take back the [[Alpha Quadrant]]. As [[latinum]] was how a [[Ferengi]] got by in life, he relied on his brother to get him through, until he was finally employed as an engineer on Deep Space 9. He joined the station's [[Bajoran]] engineering crew, as well as Chief O'Brien's maintenance team, where he received high praise.   Always bickering with his brother, Quark, both tried their best to look after Rom’s son, Nog. After the marriage contract between Rom and [https://memory-alpha.fandom.com/wiki/Prinadora his wife] expired, she left him and the baby, taking all his money with her. Due to the “divorce” and his kind nature, Rom was usually under the thumb of his older brother. At first, Rom did whatever his brother demanded. Over time, and perhaps due to the influence of their clientele, Rom began to stand up for himself. When Quark tried to keep Nog from enrolling in [[Starfleet]], Rom reminded him that ''he'' was Nog’s father, and told his son he approved. With his rising confidence, Rom managed to ask out his co-worker, Leeta. They married in [[2373]], with Benjamin Sisko officiating.   During the [[Dominion War]], Rom’s engineering skills proved to be an asset to the resistance cell that stayed on-board. He invented and constructed self-replicating mines in order to block the [[Bajoran wormhole]], thus stopping the [[Dominion]] from bringing in their forces from the [[Gamma Quadrant]]. He also managed to disabled the station’s weapons systems, leaving the station vulnerable and allowing the Federation / Klingon forces to easily recapture the station.   In [[2375]], Rom became [[Grand Nagus]] of the [[Ferengi Alliance]], following a series of social reforms. He set up his clothiers business when the [[Cardassian]] occupation left, and Starfleet took over. However, Garak hated living on DS-9, his life there meaning he was exiled from his home, with each day being a slap in the face to who and what he once was. Even after befriending Dr. Julian Bashir, he could not help but drop hints at his past life.   In [[2371]], an explosion on DS-9 destroyed Garak’s shop, though he later revealed himself to be the culprit, in order to flush out an alien assassin ([https://memory-alpha.fandom.com/wiki/Retaya a Flaxian known as “Retaya”]). When the exposure of this operative led to Garak being offered his old job back, joining his old boss on a joint Obsidian Order / [https://memory-alpha.fandom.com/wiki/Tal_Shiar Tal Shiar] mission to destroy the [[Founders]]’ homeworld in the [[Gamma Quadrant]]. However, he was also ordered to interrogate and torture Odo, he realized he didn’t have it in him to torture people he was close to. The mission ended up failing, and Garak escaped on the [[USS Defiant]], returning to DS-9 and rebuilding his clothing shop.   He spent the end days of the [[Dominion War]] as a decoder, translating [[Cardassian]] messages for [[Starfleet Intelligence]]. As he still felt a loyalty to his people, he felt as if he was betraying them, and enabling the deaths of innumerable Cardassians. He fell prey to constant panic attacks, and he became Ezri Dax’s first major patient. When circumstances of war found him on his home planet again, he led the [https://memory-alpha.fandom.com/wiki/Cardassian_Liberation_Front Cardassian Rebellion]. Though the rebellion failed, it was still a turning point in the war, and helped enable the Federation and its allies to win the [[Battle of Cardassia]], and in turn, the war.
