First discovered as a sort of “baby in a basket” in the [https://memory-alpha.fandom.com/wiki/Denorios_belt Bajoran Denorios Belt], Odo spent his formative years being studied at the [https://memory-alpha.fandom.com/wiki/Bajoran_Institute_for_Science Bajoran Science Institute], as he was a life form no one had ever seen before. After seven years of being experimented on, the shape-shifter took a quick form that was able to slap the scientist, and he was recognized as a sentient being. Initially kept in a beaker with the label of “Odo'ital,” the Cardassian word for “nothing” or “unknown sample,” he adopted the name, shortening it to just “Odo.” He professed to not minding the name, as he himself did not know who or what he was, and did not have so much as a past or a friend to speak of.
