A dataport implant.

A dataport is a device that allows a person to interface directly with a computer.

Dataports also allow information to be transferred to or from a person's mind, including memories, which can then be stored.

A third capability of dataports is allowing two people to link minds; in that capacity they are used by some black-market merchants who allow paid customers into their minds.

The typical dataport has three parts:

  • one which is implanted behind a person's ear
  • one part to attached to the implant (for the purposes of interfacing)
  • the "end" part that attaches to the target and/or computer

Although dataports are not technically illegal, they are frequently used by criminals to illegally bypass security programs.

The drawback to using dataports is that certain security measures send energy surges back through the connection, damaging the user's nervous system. This is known as being "spiked".
