The Columbus-class Scout is a Star Fleet starship class, of scout type.
History
When the aging Centaur and unreliable Yeager-class Scouts were retired prior to the General War, Star Fleet found itself without a small vessel for short range exploration. The planned Darwin-class would be inappropriate for such missions, so a new ship would need to be built. After the war was over, the Star Fleet Corps of Engineers took the small design of the new Berlin-class frigate and performed a major overhaul of the internal and external systems.
The Frigate’s armament was stripped down to a single phaser array, the torpedo tubes being replaced with a probe launcher. The torpedo targeting systems were replaced with enhanced sensor packages, and the type soon proved to be an effective short-range scout and with boosted engines also became adept in the reconnaissance role.
