Having never seen anything but approval from her parents, she was shocked at their reaction. Her father flew into a fit of anger, her mother was just shocked. They were people of peace, they said; the military was no place for a child of theirs. He wouldn’t stand for it; she wouldn’t meet Samantha’s eyes. Samantha was frightened, needless to say, but she was determined. She applied anyway, and the day she got her acceptance letter to the Academy was the last time her father said anything to her.

Star Fleet Service

Broken now, Samantha went to the Academy. She excelled at her classes, and threw herself into them with abandon. She eventually became involved in the theater, immersing herself in the lives of others so she wouldn’t have to think about her family. None of her friends knew about it; she never said anything about it to them. But time heals all wounds, and eventually, she got over it, or so she told herself. She graduated in the top three percent of her class, and was posted to the USS Philadelphia with Quill Dramar, who quickly became her close friend.
They were married not long after, as the ship orbited Vulcan thanks to some newfound friends who got them there safely. A whirlwind of a battle later, and the ship was off on a new mission.

She hadn’t really noticed that they missed the honeymoon until later; so many things happened at once that the Philadelphia had two more missions under its belt before she and Aitrus realized something was wrong. They had gotten so caught up in their jobs that they were hardly spending any time together anymore. She was worried about him, and about them, when Aitrus came back from Pangar a shell of a man. She had heard about what happened down there, the people killing the Star Fleet crews there and even each other in a civil war. So when he put in for a transfer, she put in for one with him.
Unfortunately, she got stuck on the Philadelphia. She was angry, raging at the bureaucratic nightmare that had gotten her stuck on that accursed ship. But finally, she got away, and joined her husband. He remained mired in his work, though. She didn’t know what to do. He would occasionally snap out of it long enough to spend an evening with her, and those times were wonderful. But they just made her hurt all the more when he wound up back in his work again.

So when they were reassigned to the Dauntless temporarily, she did what she could to try and snap him out of it. Finally, when he forgot their anniversary – despite having planned the entire evening with her not two nights previous – she had had enough. She went to the bar and came back to their quarters drunk. She still doesn’t remember what she said, but it was enough to make Aitrus realize his mistakes, and he did his best to make amends. He took her on a honeymoon finally, and made it even better by going on a worlds tour.
They healed from their hurt and grew closer together for it as they journeyed to their next destination, Bajor. He took her to the beach where they had had their first date, and it was a wonderful experience. It made her remember how tender he could be, remember why she loved him in the first place. Then they were kidnapped by the Maquis. Three months of captivity later, Aitrus managed to break them both out of the base, and they escaped with a shuttle into deep space. Once back to civilization, they rested for a while on Betazed, recovering from the ordeal and generally spending time together. She knew that he loved her, and she knew that she loved him more than anything. They transferred to a SFSI research station on Europa, each to their own projects, but at least they were together there.
She joined in on the ground floor of Ame-no-nuboku, a project for the Department of Terraforming designed to create landmasses on oceanic worlds. Named for the spear used to create the home islands in the Japanese creation myth, it’s intended to help relieve overcrowding due to relocations. The work was tough, but eventually they overcame the theoretical issues and, after two years, were able to move to an actual test. Currently As the Phase 1 trials got underway on an uninhabited world coreward, Samantha found herself left with just paperwork, which as it tends to do quickly grew tiresome. So when the call went out for help on the Ticonderoga, she answered the call and reported for duty as the temporary Chief Science Officer. The six-month stint reminded her not only of the joys of starship duty, but also of the dangers that were out there, and the sorrows of being away from family. She was glad that it was just a temporary position, and soon returned to her husband, who had spent the time apart getting frustrated with his own work. After some discussion back and forth, they made the radical decision to move to the reserves, effectively leaving Star Fleet.
Retirement and Parenthood
Aitrus became a teacher at a research university on Earth, but Samantha, still happy with the project, simply changed titles and became part of the civilian half of the project. They moved to a small town in the foothills of Tennessee, and had no sooner settled in when they discovered she was pregnant. Settling in to their new roles as civilians was tough, but the transition to being parents was tougher. They had discusses having kids, but hadn’t made any firm decisions until now it was sprung on them, but once their daughter, Lillian Ann, arrived, Samantha knew she wouldn’t trade it for anything. Not that long sleepless nights and days didn’t make her think about it. But the simple joys of seeing Lily grow and develop made up for it. She was glad that they had moved to solid ground before they did, and that she could raise her daughter on Earth rather than on a starship. They were happy; she was making great progress with Ame-no-nuboko, correcting flaws they had discovered in the Phase 1 trials and working towards attempt two. Aitrus was enjoying teaching, and they both were falling in love with their little girl. Nothing good lasts, however. The Krynar invasion made Aitrus want to serve. People were suffering, he would say, and he had an obligation to help. She would talk him down from it, reminding him of his obligation to her and to Lily. She hated doing it, but knew that if she let him go and something happened, she would never forgive herself. So when a fleet officer arrived and offered him the chance to command the Philadelphia on Pacficiathe homefront for the duration, all Aitrus was excited. Samantha cried, however. She knew that this was the best compromise they could find, and was what he needed to have happen to be happy. At least this way he wasn’t on the front lines, and could come home regularly. As he was coming home on one of those visits, Samantha was surprised when her mother called. After the acrimonious encounter years ago, she hadn’t heard anything from her parents. She knew her father was a stubborn man; it was where she has got her own stubborn streak. As soon as she saw her mother’s tear-stained cheeks, she knew. He had died the night before of a stroke; it had been preventable, but he had refused to seek treatment, refuse to admit there was a problem. Samantha was devastated. Fortunately, Aitrus arrived within an hour of the news, and was able to do help her keep going. She had thought, somehow, that they could make things right, that apologies could be made. But now is wait they never could. They attended the funeral in Munroe Falls, and seeSamantha stayed with her mother for a while. Of courseThey bonded again; Jennifer was glad to have her daughter back, and was proud of all she had accomplished in the service, even if she still didn’t think that brings its own problemsStar Fleet was the place for her daughter. She was even more excited to finally meet her granddaughter, and once Aitrus had to return to the Philadelphia they spent quite a bit of time together. It was Jennifer who first noticed how Lily loved to sing, and encouraged her creative side, a service both of the Colsos were grateful for. They were blessed scientifically, and while they could tell that Lily was creative, they weren’t equipped to nurture that side of her. Eventually, though, both Aitrus and Samantha were growing dissatisfied with their careers. After the war, Aitrus wound up on border patrols, while Samantha was having trouble getting the Department of Terraforming to approve Phase 2 trials, where they attempted to use their technique to raise a full landmass rather than island chains. Her days had less science in them than ever, instead being filled with bureaucratic meetings and enough red tape to surround the Neutral Zone. So when the Pioneer Expedition was announced, they made a decision to try and get postings there. The Philadelphia was assigned to the expedition fleet, while Samantha petitioned to join the colonization survey group that would be going. There were several worlds that could be good candidates for Ame-no-nuboko, and her expertise as paperwork gets boring a Star Fleet officer would help her to liaise between the civilian and military groups, much too quicklyas she had through the duration of her project.
So when She was nervous about bringing her daughter out to the call went out edge of known space, but also was excited for help on the Ticonderoga, wonders that she answered might see. She knew that progress was only made when you stepped into the call unknown, and reported for dutywhile the dangers to her family still scared her, she was determined to make a new, fresh start.
