Chief of the Boat (abbreviated as the COB) is an antiqued title still in light rotation, and is bestowed upon the top enlisted crewmember on a starship.
The COB acts as an adviser to the Commanding Officer and First Officer on matters pertaining to the enlisted crew. While the COB has authority on a starship, they are not part of the Chain of Command.
Rank-wise, the COB typically holds the rank of Senior Chief Petty Officer or Master Chief Petty Officer. The position is appointed by the Commanding Officer.
