====Early Life==life==
Gus’ parents met in a warp theory course at Starfleet Academy. Elaine was an engineering cadet and Stephen was a tactical cadet who saw Elaine entering the lecture hall and was so taken with her he snuck into the class just to speak with her. A few years after they graduated they were married and Stephen withdrew from Starfleet to enter the legal field where he would eventually become a professor of law at Nairobi University. Elaine stayed in Starfleet for a few years after Stephen, but didn’t enjoy being away from him so she resigned her commission and found a job in Nairobi working as a research engineer. This continued for some time and both Elaine and Stephen couldn’t have been happier and decided to start a family.
After his wife died, Stephen fell into a deep depression. The only way he learned to cope was in raising his son to which he devoted all of his free time. This devotion made Stephen and his son develop a very close bond that was rare even for a father and son. When Gus was ten his father began dating Jirua a fellow professor (Psychology) and they married when Gus was twelve. Jirua was welcomed into the family with open arms and hearts, and though Jirua never expected to be accepted as Gus’ mother, she did have a very warm and loving relationship with Gus and he eventually did think of her as his mother, though he never called her such and felt doing so wouldn’t be right.
====Childhood====
Despite being blind, Gus never felt mistreated or looked down on while growing up. He enjoyed his time at school, but always felt he was underestimated because of his handicap and developed a meticulous work ethic. This work ethic allowed him to flourish in school and eventually graduate near the top of his class. Gus also seemed to make friends with out even trying. It was as if he possessed a personality impossible to hold a grudge against and had such a gentle disposition despite his size. He was always kind, respectful, and humble in all things. His demeanor earned him a reputation as a ‘gentle giant.’ His large body and natural abilities made him something of a natural athlete and he seemed to excel at every sport he played, but he found the most enjoyment in soccer, swimming, and weight training.
As Gus aged he grew curious about the kind of person his mother was. Of course, Gus never knew Elaine but he always felt without her a part of himself was missing, and he had a longing to know her which could never be fulfilled. His father often told Gus stories about his mother in an attempt to help his son know his mother as best he could and he spent time with his extended family on his mother’s side who loved him dearly; however these things never satisfied Gus’ curiosity. Stephen often told Gus how he got his mother’s smile and her inquisitiveness, but most importantly he seemed to have inherited her knack for electronics and problem solving. His father always told him he was a natural born engineer like his mother and, true or not, Gus clung to this and by the time he finished high school it was a well known fact, to everyone, he was going to be an engineer.
====Starfleet====
Gus’ decision to enroll at Starfleet Academy was a surprise to no one. His family often thought it was just the next step of his engineering talent and with both his parents being former members; the assumption Gus would enlist was unspoken. He gained admission on his first attempt and became an engineering cadet. He continued his academic excellence at the Academy and also continued his physical activity, but found the required self-defense courses the most enjoyable physical training he’d ever experienced and inadvertently earned a minor as a result of his continuous enrollment in such courses. At one point he considered, and was urged by his hand-to-hand combat professors to become a security officer since he had a natural talent for the field, but his devotion to engineering was so tied into his self image and served as his sole personal connection to his mother, the idea of not becoming an engineer seemed criminal. His personality also continued to make him a good deal of friends including his best friend. Philoben was a Denobulan science cadet who served as Gus’ first roommate at the Academy. They shared the normal freshman experience most Academy members do and became close friends through experience.
