Designed to be a gunship/battlecruiser/aircraft carrier, the Akira has 15 torpedo launches, and two shuttlebays: one in front and one in the back. The idea for the shuttlebays in this heavy cruiser is that the front bay acts as the launching bay, returning to the back, protected by the rest of the ship.
In service starting in 2371, the Akira-class is typically constructed at the Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards.
Quickly becoming a common fixture in Starfleet deployments, this class appears on many a front line of engagement, most notably against the Borg in 2373. Other notable front-line positions include at Deep Space Nine during the Dominion War, as well as other key positions.
Technical Specs
The Akira-class closely resembles the NX Class, with no saucer section, instead favoring a "catamaran" hull design (two parallel hulls of equal size). The engineering section lies under the main saucer section, and houses the main deflector, as well as some of the ship's tactical systems.
Tactical Specs
This class possesses at least three phaser arrays, with numerous photon torpedo launchers along the port and starboard sides of the primary hull.
Some of the phasers rotate into place before firing.
