Unlike others of hir species, Adaran developed a curiosity for the outside universe. Though the Hermat isolate themselves from the rest of the galaxy and maintain little contact with other worlds, Adaran found hirself intrigued by the people and species s/he met through hir parent, who served as the Hermat Directorate's local representative to the Federation, and by the time s/he'd reached adulthood, s/he'd decided to leave hir homeworld to explore the galaxy. Encourage by a Federation official, s/he applied to Star Fleet Academy and was accepted with the help of his recommendation. As Adaran already had the equivalent of a college education and had the accelerated learning capacity of hir species, s/he was put into an fast-track program and graduated at age 6.
Social Life
During hir time at the Academy, s/he attempted to learn about as many other species as s/he could, finding the diversity of the Federation fascinating when compared to the homogeneity of hir own planet. S/he also found hirself to be an object of curiosity for other cadets, who had never met a Hermat before. Some found hir dual-gender threatening, but others found it interesting. At first, s/he felt it difficult to think of single-gendered persons in intimate terms, because s/he found it unsettling that they had only type of genitalia. Being intimate with someone who was essentially handicapped according to hir species' standards took overcoming some of hir own prejudices, but s/he soon adjusted to it, knowing that because s/he'd chosen a life outside hir own people s/he had little in the way of options.
S/he has had many lovers of both single-gendered sexes over the course of hir life, though s/he has never settled down into a long-term relationship, not feeling like s/he wanted to be forced into a single-gendered role, which is what most of hir single-gendered partners had wanted, either consciously or unconsciously. S/he continues to look for a single-gendered person who will accept hir for what s/he is, though at times s/he has considered returning home to find a mate. S/he isn't quite yet ready to settle down, though, preferring the wandering life to domestication.
Early Star Fleet Career
After graduation from the Academy, Adaran was assigned to the security staff at Star Fleet Headquarters on Earth, where s/he was put through specialized assault team training. S/he discovered that it was a niche where s/he perfectly fit in. It allowed hir to make use of the natural hunting skills of the Hermat, which gave hir advantages over other species. It also gave hir the adrenaline rushes that hir species craved. The First General War was in full swing by that time, and upon completion of the program, s/he was shipped off to the Cardassian Front, where s/he spent the next three years operating out of the USS Saratoga, earning several medals and commendations for ground combat and boarding operations. By the time the war had ended, s/he had made full lieutenant and had been put in charge of hir own team.
After the war, Adaran was assigned as Chief of Security aboard the USS Lansing, which spent much of its time patrolling the Cardassian border. While s/he missed the adrenaline rush of wartime combat, s/he quickly adapted to running starship security, finding ways to make it suit hir interests. S/he set up a program to train qualified members of hir staff in specialized assault team procedures. This program soon caught the eye of Star Fleet Command, which began to give the USS Lansing assignments that needed the skills that Adaran had taught hir students. A promotion to lieutenant commander followed, and s/he was soon sent back to Earth for command training.
Return to Earth
While on Earth, s/he began a short relationship with a Human woman named Kari Lang. Though the two quickly became very close, things between them fell apart after only a few months. Adaran found out a few weeks later, however, that Kari was pregnant with hir child. By that time, Adaran had graduated command school and had been assigned as Chief of Security on the USS Sam Houston in the 2nd Fleet. S/he was unable to return to Earth for the birth of the child, a girl who Kari named Sara, though Kari agreed to allow Adaran parental rights. Like the few other half-Hermat children that had been born before her, Sara inherited the life cycle of her Hermat parent and grew quickly, reaching adulthood at age 3. Adaran arranged for her to be educated in the traditional Hermat manner and for her to receive the life-prolonging treatment that would allow her to live past 40.
Also while on Earth, Adaran made the acquaintance of Sabina Suder, then a young midshipman working for the command training program. Though they never spent any time with each other socially, the two never would again meet in the future and form a strong bond with each other.
Promotion to Command
Adaran spent two years on the Sam Houston before being promoted to first officer. Hir time in that capacity was marked by the start of the Second Federation-Romulan War and then the Borg invasion. S/he helped organize and lead numerous assault missions during both conflicts, earning further commendations and proudly boasting the record of losing the fewest people during such missions. Once the Borg had been defeated, Star Fleet went into a period of reorganization, and s/he was promoted to captain and given hir own command, the light cruiser USS Hydra. S/he spent much of the early part of hir command on patrol duty. When the Third Federation-Romulan War broke out in 2408, though, the Hydra found itself at the initial battle at Star Base 157.
The Hydra stayed at the front lines throughout much of the war, and near the end it found itself caught up in a fierce battle as Romulan forces made a strong push to gain Federation territory. Federation forces held their ground and eventually pushed back their opponents, but the victory came at great cost. Several ships were severely damaged, including the Hydra. Most of the crew was killed, and Adaran found hirself critically injured. Hir left leg was crushed, and hir back was broken, resulting in spinal cord damage. Paralyzed, s/he required several surgeries to repair the damage, and finally s/he was able to regain control of and feeling in hir lower body. Hir leg had to be amputated, though, and replaced with a cloned copy. Facing a long period of physical therapy, s/he was relieved of hir command and placed on indefinite medical leave on Star Base Bravo.
Medical Leave
Confined to bed for a month and then having only limited mobility for another few months, Adaran grew restless. S/he hated being inactive. Hir life had always been one of constant motion, and now s/he was forced to slow down. The time off, though, did give hir time to think about hir future, and s/he grew increasingly unhappy at the prospect of being put on a desk job when s/he returned to active duty. S/he became determined to regain hir lost strength and mobility, and s/he worked hard to make it happen. Hir fears of being put out to pasture came true when s/he was offered a promotion to commodore and an administrative position in the 2nd Fleet. S/he rejected it and put in for a new command instead. Hir request was rejected on medical grounds, which only made hir work harder at physical therapy.
During hir recovery period, s/he again ran into Sabina, now a lieutenant commander and assistant to the fleet commander, Vice Admiral zh'Matis. Sabina admired hir determination and took an interest in helping hir recover, and the two ended up forming a bond, which quickly began to cross over into romantic territory. They've always pulled back from making a commitment to each other though, knowing that such a complication wasn't best for either of them at the moment.
Command of the Columbia
Eventually, Adaran found hirself almost able to match hir level of mobility and strength from before hir injury, and s/he once again applied for a command. This time, s/he had a plan though. S/he wanted to put hir talents to their proper use, and s/he proposed to lead a special ops force based on a small starship capable of rapid response and of handling missions normally too dangerous to assign other vessels. Star Fleet balked at first but concurrently unfolding events made them reconsider, and they finally decided to approve the request. They gave hir the USS Columbia, recently built, and within a few days the ship was sent out on its first mission to Gamma Doradus III, an uninhabited planet where Romulan terrorists were believed to be hiding a cache of ultritium in an abandoned science facility.
Not long after Adaran took control of the Columbia, s/he found hirself involved with its Chief Medical Officer, Levine Meels, a half-Human, half-Betazoid female. Their relationship evolved rather quickly, though Adaran wasn't sure if it would last or if it would end like all hir other attempts at romance, so s/he kept up hir guard, not letting hirself get too comfortable. The two remained together throughout the mission. Levine became ill soon into their second mission, however, and was sent to Earth on medical leave, and Adaran found hirself single again.
===Columbia Exploits===After Gamma Doradus III, the Columbia reported to Star Base Delta to deliver its first officer, Commander Benjamin Vaughn to his new command. The ship also picked up Lieutenant Xan Macleod, to whom Adaran was assigned to provide command training during their return to Star Base Bravo. The simple training mission turned into an actual engagement though as they were diverted to Yadalla Prime, where the planetary government was in danger of falling. The Columbia was to move an intel listening post off the planet to a new location. After transporting down to the surface, Adaran and hir team found themselves in a hostage situation when they were captured by Romulan terrorists known as the Uihvueri. Managing to turn the tables on their captors, they extracted themselves and hurried to return to the ship, which was without power and in danger of being boarded. Upon arrival, however, s/he found that Macleod had the situation well under control, and s/he decided to keep him as hir permanent first officer. (See Revolution.)
After the ship returned to Star Base Bravo, Adaran found hirself falling in love with hir new Chief Tactical Officer, Trac Klapphroth, a Deltan. Despite the rules requiring Deltans to remain celibate while in Star Fleet, Adaran and Tracey began seeing each other, risking their careers to be together.
The Columbia was next assigned to infiltrate territory held by the Federation's new unknown enemy, who had destroyed Bajor, Star Base Charlie, Sierra 18 and several Star Fleet vessels after they came through the Bajoran wormhole. A SOCOM team had previously been dispatch to gather intel on the invaders but had been forced down on Caratas IV. The Columbia's assignment was to retrieve the information and the team if they were still alive. Equipped with SOCOM's newly-designed and classified stealth system, which effectively gave them a cloaking device, they made their way to the planet and found the team dead, though they managed to locate a data crystal in their possession. With the stealth system overheating, they were forced to land and hide. Soon they came under fire and had to fight their way off the planet. Tracey lost her life in the battle while trying to save another crewmember, sending Adaran into a difficult grieving process, made all the more painful by the fact that the mission had failed. The data crystal had been blank. (See Hide and Seek.)
Temporary Relief of Command
Preoccupied over Tracey's death, Adaran became self-destructive in hir behavior, causing SOCOM to question hir reliability and effectiveness. To deal with the potential problem this could create, they assigned hir what was essentially a suicide mission: to assassinate an important Tal'Shiar officer. Taking Raass Giraath with hir, s/he left command of the Columbia to Captain Imina Sevala and set out for a rogue planet in Romulan space, where a trap had been set for their target. The mission was a success, and the pair managed to fight their way off the world by bloody hand-to-hand battle with Tal'Shiar and Uihvueri soldiers. Adaran's skill at hunting served hir well. S/he managed to take down several enemy soldiers as well as a Uihvueri telepath. The aggression released on the mission was a needed catharsis for hir pain over the loss of Tracey, as s/he was unable to grieve any other way but through letting hir emotions out in violence, and by the time s/he and Giraath rendezvoused with the Columbia, s/he was feeling more hir old self again. Finding the frigate in battle with Tal'Shiar ships just inside the Neutral Zone, s/he and Giraath helped them fight off the attackers and return to Federation Space, where s/he once again assumed command of the Columbia. (See Betrayal)
Upon the ship's return to Star Base Bravo, a medals and promotion party was organized at the Pussycat Lounge, a well-known establishment on the base. During the party, the Uihvueri managed to bring a cloaked vessel to within a few hundred meters of the hull and detonated it. The terrorist attack killed over 20,000 people and trapped the Columbia crew in a damaged section of the base. Adaran quickly organized rescue and evacuation efforts, and s/he and hir crew managed to save the lives of multiple civilians before the section lost atmosphere. After making it to safety, s/he continued helping with basewide relief efforts and worked closely with SOCOM on intelligence related to the terrorist attack. (See Escape from the Pussycat Lounge)
War Crimes Accusation
Shortly after the attack, the Columbia was sent back into Romulan territory to extract or eliminate a Federation intelligence agent who had been apprehended by the Tal'Shiar and was being held at the prison base Outpost 19. Upon arrival at the base, they found that the entire crew had been murdered by the agent, who they learned had been used by Uivhueri telepaths as a pawn. Telepathic suggestions had been implanted in his mind, which had caused him to kill the base crew and the other prisoners except for a high-level Uihvueri officer who was then rescued by three nearby cloaked Uihvueri vessels. When the Columbia's presence was made known, a battle ensued. Unknown to them, however, the agent had set the base to self-detonate, and two of the Uihvueri vessels were destroyed in the blast. The third had cloaked and was presumed destroyed as well, but it had actually survived.
