Albert Einstein's theory of general relativity is tested by observations of the "bending of light" during a total solar eclipse.
These observations and tests are made independently of each other, by Arthur Eddington in Príncipe, and Andrew Crommelin in Brazil.

The International Astronomical Union is founded in Paris, France.
Their main objective is to advance astronomy in all aspects, including promoting astronomical research, outreach, education, and development through global cooperation.

-* The United States Air Service began a series of tests on October 8 to see if US pilots and airplanes could fly reliably for long periods of time, over long distances. The tests, called the ''Transcontinental Reliability and Endurance Test'', ended on the 31st after 54 accidents and 7 deaths.  As a result, they learned that the US did not have the equipment for that kind of mobility and that their pilots needed better training on how to fly in adverse weather conditions.
