* The United States Air Service began a series of tests on October 8 to see if US pilots and airplanes could fly reliably for long periods of time, over long distances. The tests, called the ''Transcontinental Reliability and Endurance Test'', ended on the 31st after 54 accidents and 7 deaths. As a result, they learned that the US did not have the equipment for that kind of mobility and that their pilots needed better training on how to fly in adverse weather conditions.
