- April 11 – Margaret C. MacDonald is appointed Matron-in-Chief of the Canadian Nursing service band.
She becomes the first woman in the British Empire to reach the rank of Major.
- June 28 – Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria is assassinated, triggering the start of World War I.
- July 21 – Sinope, the outermost known moon of Jupiter, is discovered by Seth Barnes Nicholson at Lick Observatory.
- September 14 – Royal Australian Navy submarine HMAS AE1 vanishes while on combat patrol near Papua New Guinea.
This begins one of Australia's longest naval mysteries: the sunken vessel will not be discovered for another 103 years.
