The explosion would later be known as the "Tunguska Event."
- Wilbur Wright flies in France for the first time, demonstrating true controlled powered flight to Europe.
- September 17 – Thomas Selfridge becomes the first person to die in an airplane crash.
The pilot, Orville Wright, is severely injured in the crash, but recovers.
