Despite having primary training within tactical, Victoria figured it wouldn’t hurt receiving security training as well. There was a little overlap between the two, and she figured not only would she be honoring the man that gave her a new life, but it could also make her a better officer. Graduating as a new officer within the fleet, all Victoria could hope for would to be assigned somewhere she could make a difference.

Victoria’s first assignment out of the Academy was the USS Charon. She’d heard through the rumor mill that being posted to that particular ship might not be a good move for her as it pertained to her career. Having just gone through two back-to-back mission failures, with the last one resulting in the death of its captain, there seemed to be some credence to what Victoria had heard.

Even if fighting her posting were possible, it wouldn’t be the first choice that Victoria would take. The first course of action would be to determine whether or not the curse was actually true. It wouldn’t look good on her as a Star Fleet Officer if she fled at the first alleged red flag. If Victoria were to try and request a transfer, she wanted to make sure there was no other choice first.

That assessment would begin as the Charon made its way to the Vinex system for Victoria’s first official mission within Star Fleet. From what Victoria gathered during her time on the Bridge, Star Fleet had detected another ship within that system. However, while the Charon was in orbit of Vinex III, the scans didn’t support that assumption and made her wonder if someone had been pulling their leg.

As things progressed, more evidence that confirmed that the Charon was a cursed ship surfaced. While attempting to launch a second probe, there was an incident that caused a failure in the firing sequence. This caused the tube to be temporarily unusable due to the jam, and this was compounded by the fact that communications with the Away Team on the planet were being disrupted.

The most difficult part of the mission was attempting to find the needle in a haystack that had been apparently left for the Charon to find. For her first true duty shift on the Bridge, Victoria felt as though she hadn’t presented herself into the brightest light to her superiors. With all of her scans of the Vinex system turning up short, she saw it as a failure and presumed that her command team believed the same.

After the mission, things seemed to go from bad to worse. During a late-night workout in the Charon’s gym, Victoria had the unfortunate experience in being unwittingly entangled in an incident. With a sparring session between Lieutenant Lincoln and Commander Pond seemingly gone bad, Victoria believed she had a responsibility to bring it to an end. Despite her initial attempts to bring the issue to a conclusion using her words, Victoria fell flat on her face.

Everything changed when Pond made it seem like Lincoln was trying to kill her with his bare hands. Perhaps it had been nothing but an overexaggeration, but considering how unwavering Lincoln had seemed it wasn’t worth the risk of ignoring the potential threat. At gunpoint, but without firing a shot, Victoria managed to bring the fight to an end.

However, it had the unfortunate side effect of painting her as the villain. In the heat of the moment, it seemed as though it were the only option to help safeguard a fellow crewmates life. In the aftermath, all Victoria wanted to do was forget the incident after all the paperwork had been filed. All she’d ever wanted was to help others, but it seemed as though sometimes that was a great mistake. In an attempt to better prevent another incident where she’d be the potential bad guy, Victoria grew cold and distant from others. It would be better to try and be as calculating as possible versus growing attached to others, to make decisions.

Despite her negative experiences, Victoria was able to proceed further in her career. Whether it was simply because of time served or that she’d actually impressed her superiors, she couldn’t say for sure. Regardless, the young woman had seemingly earned a promotion to Ensign.
