Redirected page to Medical Glossary#M
A myelin sheath is a layer of white, fatty material which is wrapped around the axons of many #REDIRECT [[neuron]]s found within the body. It acts as an electrical insulator, preventing electrical currents from leaving the axon. It also speeds the process by which impulses travel along the [[neuron]]. In axons which lack myelin sheaths, impulses travel in waves, whereas in myelinated axons, impulses 'hop', moving faster than they otherwise would. Myelin sheaths which have been lost or degraded disrupt signals between the [[brain]] and the affected parts of the body, and are a contributing factor to many neurodegenerative diseases, including multiple sclerosis. Myelin sheaths do not regenerate naturally, therefore medical attention is necessary should degradation take place. [[Category:Medical]][[Category:AnatomyGlossary#M]]
