Once the Dauntless' covert mission was complete, Maggie settled down to consider her options. She had been passed up for a promotion, both Griffin and her friend Theo Caldecott were gone, and her return to the Dauntless left her realizing she no longer felt she 'belonged' on-board. A slightly bitter Maggie then began to look into transferring. She reasoned that a change of scenery might be good for her; to help her readjust back into normal life after the wormhole incident. With Piper in tow, Maggie transferred to the Avenger, another Avenger-class ship like the Ticonderoga and the Dauntless, where she would hope to leave the bad taste of the past behind her.

Unfortunately, “bad” seemed to follow her. The Avenger, while structurally the same ship as the Dauntless, had other and short-lived plans for the Tactical Lieutenant. Sent on a covert and confusing mission of its own, the Avenger soon found itself pitted against another Federation ship: the Gettysburg. Seemingly stolen from Starbase, a good chunk of the crew (Maggie now included) went after the Avenger, only to recover it and quickly see it blown up. While it appeared the crew of the Gettysburg had been the culprit, the Avenger crew beamed aboard only to find that the villains had apparently committed suicide. The Avenger crew returned to Starfleet with the Gettysburg and the fragments of the Avenger, unsure of what their future (re?) assignment would be. While waiting, the Federation News Network started to piece together similar incidents, informing the population of the Federation that they were spiraling into a Civil War. Unable to contact her friends in Starfleet, her family on Earth, or her boyfriend Griffin (who was in the Alpha Quadrant), Maggie panicked. She became paranoid and manic, and an alcoholic to boot. Finally, her friend Isambard Eyles was able to contact her through an official channel, and Maggie's extreme behavior was slowly controlled. Though Starfleet (or what was left of it) saw it fit to assign Maggie and her new crew a mission, Maggie was still unable to contact Griffin Wright. While isolated while in her “training exercises,” Maggie was unable to send or receive messages. The new crew of the Gettysburg was more or less confined to Starbase Delta, which was the only respite Maggie found.
