A unit is one vessel, operating alone. This can range from one Runabout on a survey, to a Federation-class Carrier yet to join its Carrier Group.
 
===Division (Tactical Unit)===
 
A Division is the smallest tactical unit used in Star Fleet, usually comprising of between two and four ships depending on size. For example, a Frigate or Destroyer division would likely contain four vessels, while a Heavy Cruiser division would contain only two. A Division is commanded by the senior Commanding Officer, regardless of rank.
===Flotilla===
A Flotilla is the tactical grouping a group of between two and five three Divisions of smaller vessels such as Frigates or Destroyers for a specific purpose, such as patrol or convoy defence. Unlike Battle Groups, Flotillas are permanent organisations, and a vessel may be assigned one from the day it is commissioned to the day it is decommissioned or destroyed. A Flotilla is usually commanded by a senior Captain, often as a lead-in to flag rank.
===Squadron===
Squadrons are a small group of generally three to five shipsbetween two and four Divisions. Although the exact number of vessels could vary; a Klingon A Cruiser Squadron of Birds-of-Prey would usually consists of five shipsbe made from two Cruiser Divisions, whereas while a Destroyer Squadron would be composed of Jem'Hadar Attack Ships three or four Destroyer or Frigate Divisions. Squadrons are permanent tactical organisations, though are usually was comprised only deployed together during times of threecrisis. A Star Fleet Cruiser Squadron often comprises three is usually commanded by a Commodore or four Cruiser-size vessels; often a mix of Light Cruisers and Heavy Cruisers with a Galactic Survey Cruiser for sensor supportsenior Captain.

===Wing===
A Wing is refers to a grouping collection of several ships for a specific purpose. Depending on the military, a Wing could consist small vessels greater than that of a different number of ships. UsuallySquadron-size, Wings were named by the specific mission type. Star Fleet used Attack Wings and Tactical Wings. The command of a permanent Wing such as the Seventh Tactical Wing required an officer superior to the rank of Captain in command, other non-permanent wings such as Cruiser or Galaxy wings could also be commanded by a Captain.  A Attack Craft Wing may also refer to a Starfighter Wing, such as one launched from a Star Base or Carrier. In this respect, a Wing is usually formed of between two and five Squadrons, commanded by a Commander or Captain.
===Battle groupGroup===
Battle Groups consist of an arbitrary number of ships, usually gathered temporarily for a single mission that mostly involved combat, though Battle Groups can exist as more permanent organisations during times of war. Battle Groups of all forms are commanded by a Flag Officer of at least Commodore rank, though in emergencies a senior Captain has been given command.

A Carrier Group is a form of Battle Group consisting of a number of ships formed around a single Federation-class Carrier.

Star Fleet organises all ships in Numbered Fleets. A Numbered Fleet may consist of several hundred ships, all localised in a specific region of space or operating independently on exploration missions. There are currently at least seven Numbered Fleets operating in Star Fleet. A Numbered Fleet is commanded by a Flag Officer with the rank of Rear Admiral or higher.
