The hull structure was sturdy enough to take the brunt of an attack and survive, and the ship was large enough to keep a crew and supplies aboard for the many months needed to complete a research project in deep-space. Best of all, the design was modular – parts were interchangeable and the ship could function either as a Heavy Cruiser, or a Science Ship. There was just one snag, the parts couldn’t be in place at the same time…
