Since her Mother was often busy with her work at Star Fleet Medical and her brother had gone to [[Star Fleet Academy]], Samantha was left to raise herself. She discovered a love for softball and played through the end of high school. Samantha became something of a wild child during her teenage years. When she was of age, she applied and was accepted into Starfleet Academy.

Samantha excelled at the Academy. Her love of engineering made her an excellent student. She also found a sense of purpose that her life had been missing, a duty to others. While at the academy she participated in numerous activities, including playing on the softball team, and working as a crew chief for one of the Flight Team’s shuttles. It was here that she met Vorak, the man who would eventually become the father of her child, though short-lived it would be.

In addition her major of engineering, Samantha studied flight control operations as a minor where she earned her pilot wings. During her last year at the academy, in 2402, the Borg returned.

After graduating, Midshipman Samantha Dramar was assigned to the USS Apollo under command of Commander Aitrus Colso as an engineering officer. The ship saw heavy combat against the borg. As a young ensign and then lieutenant J.G., Samantha received numerous commendations for bravery. During the final conflict of the Borg Invasion, Samantha recieved a gold star for risking her life to shut down the ruptured coolant tank aboard the Apollo, saving the ship.

After the war, Samantha received a promotion to Lieutenant and a transfer to the USS Avenger as Chief Engineer. Shortly thereafter, was the Invasion, which the romulans took full advantage of. A year and three months into her tour aboard the Avenger Sam discovered that she was with child. She hid the knowledge of her child from her CO. Knowing that they were at war, Sam feared that she would be removed from ship and crew. This was a decision that would change her life.
